Re: Using salt in your aquarium #11
Hi loachy,

Don't mean to confuse you but the dosage you mentioned is the same as 0.1% salt and at that level, you can add it in one go. It is only if you need to raise it to around 0.3% then it is a good idea to increase by 0.1% every 12-24hrs. BTW, if you are used to liters and grams, the equation is a lot easier. It is 1g/L = 0.1% so a 240L tank needs 240g of salt for 0.1% concentration.
I know enough to know that I don't know enough

I have done three days of salt dosing now, is that it? Or do I carry on in a day/week or so?

Re: Using salt in your aquarium #13
I suggested adding the lower dose over 3 days as you would the higher dose because the loaches don't usually take to salt, and would be warey of adding the full dose normally recommended so unless anyone can let us know if they have used the full dose with good results, then I would leave it as it is and see how your clown loach respond.

Re: Using salt in your aquarium #14
I dont know if this has already been said but you cant use salt if you have zeolite in your tank/pond, as zeolite draws in ammonia and if it comes in contact with a high concentration of salt if can cause the zeolite to "dump" all of the ammonia into the pond or tank, and depending on how long you have had the zeolite in the system depends on how much gets dumped, so if youve been using it for 5 years, 5 years of ammonia will be dump killing you fish

also salt can make certain chemicals more toxic aswell

Re: Using salt in your aquarium #15
Hello All

I have been using salt in my fish tak for a few months now, everytime I do a 20% change I add salt to the water I am replacing.

Should I be doing this?

I thought it was to be used all the time!

Thanks

Simon

Re: Using salt in your aquarium #16
Hello Simon aquarium salt is fine used as a tonic or as a supportive to treatments, but is not recommended as a permenant thing in a freshwater tank, so you can start to remove it by not adding any to your replacement water, keep a check on the amount removed each time just in case you have to use it again for any reason, then you will know if there is any left in the tank to take account for ok

If you feel you would like to replace it with something, then I can recommend Liquisil by Interpet as a general tonic, although if you have carbon or the likes in your filter it may abzorb it back out so best not to use them together

Re: Using salt in your aquarium #20
Hi All,

I try not to use salt unless the fish dont look perky, if you can get a balance in your tank then you only need salt when things go a drift.
