Re: ENGLAND #2
Not sure Lewis would be to happy to win that way.

He did a great job in coming through from behind but it was his car and in fact his team that beat him. If he had been put on new tyres in China instead of being left out on worn ones, he wouldnt have crashed and this last race would have been a completly different prospect. Its almost as though his team didnt want him to win at all. Any conspiracy theorists out there?

Re: Wee toad or possibly a Frog? #3
Yep frogs no problemo! I have had ponds for years and always ended up with frogs, never had a problem. Apart from the wife being terrfied of them! LOL. Had to remove about 40 frogs from the pond this year as it was gettin a bit crowded.

There is an old saying that goes along the lines of "thats more fun than a bucket of frogs"! Trust me a bucket full of frogs, or even half full, in a car on the way to the local lake is hilarious, stick a bag over the top and watch it constantly explode upwards as the frogs try to get out!

Another good thing to do with frogs if you want to see them during the day is trick them into thinking its raining. A hosepipe with a good spray attachment does the trick. All the frogs will get out of the pond and go looking for food!

Re: Feeding pond fish over autumn and winter #4
Got to agree with the last post. If you have just added 12 koi in one hit then your filter will struggle to cope with all the added bio mass and waste produced by the new fish. A bit like new tank syndrome. So I would check for ammonia and nitrIte as well as NitrAte.

All pond fish should be denied food once the water is regulary below 6-10 degrees as they can no longer digest food at low temps and it will just sit in there gut and rot. If you wish to continue feeding between 6 and 10 degrees then you should only feed wheatgerm based foods, brown bread is good.

Dont worry about your fish going hungry, its a natural cycle and they will have built up fat reserves during the warmer months to get them through the winter, and as the temp drops so does there activity resulting in less need for food.

Re: White foam #5
White and a brownish fam on the surface of the pond is caused by excess protien in the water. Caused I would think by over feeding and or dead and rotting fish/plant matter.

The only way I know to rid your self of the problem is with a "fractionator" a bit like a protien skimmer in a marine tank.

Im bound to have misspelled that ar indeed even given a completly wrong name, so if anyone knows the proper one fell free to correct me.

Sounds as though its a form of algae and will proably clear as your filter matures. Dont worry about it for now, let nature take its course and it will probably clear in a week or two.

A UV wont clear this kind of algae, its for cleaning green water, and have heard somewhere, that a scientific investigation gave no reason for it killing blanket weed.

Re: Disposing of light tubes? #10
I have two options for mine;

1, If they are still working, I keep couple in case one blows and I need a quick replacement.

2, My council insist that we recycle as much of everything as we can, but like you have no where to do so for tubes, so.....I chuck em on the back of the bin wagon.
