Ok so does it need land...ie is it amphibious? (We so need a spell checker on here!!!!)

Thanks!

You could suggest to your sister she should research before she gets the animals too Saves a lot of hassle in the long run

Re: Newts????? #4
i use this site and the forums on it to get information about my axolotls and my dratted tiger salamander.

http://www.caudata.org/

from the little i know about newts i think you do need to provide a land base and dry/damp shelter as well as water

.....so right about the resaerch thing. im learning that self control is important.

Re: Newts????? #5
i take it she bought it and not took it from the wild, if it is a wild one then take it back where she got it as it's illegal to take any british amphibian or reptile from the wild

if its shop bought it'll be the chinese fire bellied newt if it has black smooth skin or japanese if it has brown warty skin

they require land and are best kept in cooler temperatures like 20*C to keep them healthy, feed on live/frozen bloodworm

any other info, just post/pm me

depends, what do you want to find out? far easier to answer questions than an unambiguous one

Re: Newts????? #9
has he got land to go on? the articles ive read just say to gradually increase land and decrease water as they morph, and they only need a bowl just deep enough to lie in when they have finished.
he sounds so cool! have been reading up on them since you mentioned him!

Re: Newts????? #10
so your sure it is a tiger salamander and not just an axolotl thats morphing as it does happen occasionally

either way you'll need to change the tank to about 75% land with moss and things growing on the dirt substrate and other cover plants a for feeding, i'd avoid crickets as they'd eat the salamander at night, locusts may be ok but that caudata site was the one i used to get my info on my fire bellys so would be your best (but not only) source of info as i've not kept any salamanders
