Fin Rot, Ich, or White Spot ? #1
Hi

Im new to the forum and have some problems with a couple of Oranda's we bought about four weeks ago.
It is a new tank setup, was left for about 2 weeks before introducing fish. We are using an interpret undergravel filter, uplift tube, with Maxi MP400 powerhead.

After a few days i noticed a white spot on the tail of one of the fish, i observed for a day and then noticed a second. I started a course of melafix and after 7 days there has been none or little improvement. It started to clear after a few days then deteriorated, and now there appears to be damage to the fin, with a white spot attached.

I have left 2 days, and just swapped to Waterlife Myxazin (just on the second day) which i read was good for treating finrot, but to be honest im not 100% sure what this is, and therfore the best way to treat it.

The second fish has now got a small white spot on its tail too.

I have included a couple of pictures so you can see what i mean, below.

They are eating well, very active, though can be seen gasping sometimes in the evening - not sure whether that is related at all?

I have tested the water quality with the tetra test strips , all looks ok, with the folowing results :-

PH 7.2 - 7.6
KH 6 - 10
GH 6 - 10
Nitrite 0 - 1 mg/l
Nitrate 0 - 10 mg/l

Any ideas ?

many thanks

Léon

you need cuprazin or protozin, for whitespot if that is what it is, di

I thought it could be fin-rot, but not sure?

Hello there I would say the reason your fish are gasping at the surface is because your tank is possibly going through a cycle see link:

also take a look at the second link below and tell us if the white spots are anything like on the photo as it is hard to tell going by your photo's sorry, but if it is white spot they may shred their fins by scratching on the gravel etc http://www.fishkeepinguk.co.uk/disease.htm

I am new at fishkeeping, but heard that your fish can develop a secondary infection (bacterial or fungal) after white spot/ich. Is it possible that's the problem?

that can happen, having the ich/white spot can leave your fish weakened and suseptable to other things like fungus or a bacterial problem. you should keep a close eye on the fish to make sure that they arent gettin the second sickness, i wouldnt recomend treating if they dont have it, if its not broke dont fix it ya know. and to be honest tho from the picture i can really see what the problem is, maybe im not looking in the right places...
Fishness...its not a thing, its a state of mind...

You are so lucky not knowing ich / white spot!! I hope you and your fish will never personally know it.
It's the most common fish disease, you fish can get not just from an infected fish, but just from being stressed. It's a pain.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!
