Growth on goldfish eye #1
Hello, is anyone able to identify this growth on Mr Bubble's eye? It first appeared at the end of September, and I treated it with a Protozin Whitespot and Fungus treatment as it looks like a fungus to me. It didn't seem to make much of an improvement, but it didn't get any worse either. So I did two treatments back to back as some reviewers said that had worked well for them. I left it a couple of weeks to give him a break and then used a treatment just for Ich as a he'd developed a few spots on his tail, which cleared up quickly. A few weeks ago I tried the Protozin again, but this morning he has a new spot in the middle of the growth and the growth has now spread all the way across his eye...it was only three quarters of the way up a couple of weeks ago.
His friends are all fine, and he seems happy and not particularly bothered by it. He's eating well and is being as naughty and funny as he normally is, but I don't want him to get any worse...I'm very worried about him so any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.
I hope I've uploaded these photos OK...I can't see them anywhere though...but here goes, finger's crossed!

Re: Growth on goldfish eye #2
It looks very similar to what my goldfish developed. I'd most definitely recommend treating for bacterial infection eg Waterlife Myxazin or eSHa 2000. Let us know how you get on.

[PS. Apologies that can only reply briefly.]

Hi, thank you. I actually started treating with Melafix and Pimafix, which I've been told I can safely use together. So I'll let you know how it turns out...finger's crossed :)

Re: Growth on goldfish eye #5
Well, the Melafix and Pimafix turned out to be a total nightmare. The first day was fine, all fishes happy and eating as usual. The second day, they slowed down a bit and didn't seem so active. Day three they were all sat on the bottom of the tank and took a while to notice the food, whereas they're all usually wiggling excitedly as I open the cupboard to prepare the food.
Also on day three, Mr Bubbles developed three large white bumps on the top of his head, so I was not impressed.
I continued to day 4, thinking that maybe things had to get worse before they got better...but all the while being very concerned for all my other fishes too. Then at midday I did a 50% water change, and again for the next three days...but I can still smell the oil in the water. I now have three dead Nerites (I've always removed them when treating the tank, but this awful stuff said it was snail safe! Plus, I accidently left a couple of snails in the tank when treating for fungus and white spot and when I saw them, they'd been in there for the full treatment of both medications, and were still very much alive! And they both said that snails were definitely not safe to be treated with those medications!), and a very sick and unhappy fish with swim bladder issues. He was perfectly healthy and happy before this treatment...so I'm very upset and very annoyed with myself for using it and making him ill...and for killing my poor snails!
I can only advise anyone thinking of using these medications (or poisons!) to steer clear, unless they want to slowly kill their beloved pets! 😥

I'm very sad to say that in the few minutes since writing the last post, my beloved Obi has passed away...he was my first fishy actually born in the tank, so my first Grandfish...and I'm very angry with myself for using those medications as I feel as if I murdered him. I can only hope the daily 50% water changes will help prevent my other little angels from getting sick.

Re: Growth on goldfish eye #7
Very sorry to read of this, Shubunkin.

I know folk have had mixed experiences with Melafix and Pimafix, ranging from possibly helping short-term to poor outcomes (sometimes catastrophic in fish with labyrinth organs eg bettas/gourami or pencilfish). Personally, I use M sporadically, and have used P once or twice, with nerites in the tank.

My inkling is that more likely to blame was the much stronger meds beforehand (albeit not overtly evident at the time), those meds may have impaired/killed the filter's beneficial bacteria colony causing the tank to recommence cycling (and in turn affecting the snails and Mr B), and the M+P combination on top of those factors may have been "the final straw" for them.

Before re-considering any meds, I would strongly suggest monitoring ammonia/nitrite/nitrates daily to ensure that the tank hasn't recommenced the cycling process, until you're sure that the tank is fully cycled and stable again.
