Comet goldfish can’t eat #1
Hi all. I have had my comet goldfish for 10 years and 2 fancy tails for 18 months. They are in a 100L tank with an aqua one PFI filter. The ammonia and nitrite are 0. I had a problem with nitrates for about 6 weeks after moving in November (highest was 80) but now under 40. They are fed a combination of flake and bloodworm. With weekly water changes using seachem prime, and aquarium salt. There is also seachem de-nitrate in the filter.

So nearing 3 weeks ago I noticed my comet was lethargic and bottom dwelling. Observed him for a few days and thought he was constipated so fed him a couple of cooked shelled peas. No sign of him pooping them out but obviously can’t watch 24/7. Moved him to a hospital tank and tried peas again - definitely no sign of them. I’ve looked in his mouth and there is no sign of anything lodged in there.

Continued to not feed him and introduced melafix for a week. Then developed a slight swelling on one side only - but began swimming around a lot more and actively looking for food. Tried feeding him a flake of food he sucked it in but 30 seconds later spat it back out. Tried a couple of bloodworms and the same thing happened.

So did a large water change and added interpet 09 anti-internal bacteria and withholding food for another week. Still not able to swallow! He is active - no fin clamping but still has the swelling although I don’t think it is increasing. I’ve just started a second treatment week with the interpet but I’m clueless as to what else to try.

I'm sorry to say he looks very sick indeed. He's pineconing (scales raised) and they rarely come back from that. He also looks very stunted - he should be approaching 10-12 inches long at his age. You can try a treatment with Esha 2000 which sometimes has limited success with dropsy, but to be honest I would be thinking about putting him to sleep. 100 litres is really too small for 3 goldfish and is likely the cause of the stunting.

He’s 5 inches nose to base of tail or 7 inches including tail.

This is a side view of the swollen area.

Can only reply very briefly (sorry) but agree re eSHa 2000 being best option at this stage (more effective than Interpet). In the interim (as you may be able to get hold of it sooner than the eSHa 2000), an Epsom salt bath may help.
