Re: Rescuing a goldfish: leaky tank, fish with a red gill - top tips? #11
Glad that Rusty's move went well.
A substrate isn't absolutely essential - goldfish do like to root around in it but, having had too many scares with my own goldfish (RIP) choking on gravel and ingesting sand, I'd be inclined *not* to get Rusty any as he probably won't miss what he hasn't had. Instead, a few moss balls and silk plants might provide some interest for him. Silk plants are better than plastic to prevent him tearing his fins on them. Aqua One, AquaManta, Hugo Kamishi, and BiOrb have good silk plants. The ones with the ball-shaped, weighted base are particularly good as they are self-standing and don't topple over or need substrate built up around the base to hold them upright.

Thought I’d post a quick update.

Silk plants are fab, he interacts & swims through them & I also picked up a fresh food clip - huge hit, he is very lively tearing the seaweed strips (pictured).

I’m treating RO with alkaline buffer & trace minerals, did gentle 10% water changes, course of melafix for his eye, now on weekly 25% changes.

Thanks again for your top tips, it’s going well & I’ll look at bigger tanks next.

Great news! Thanks for the update and photo of him enjoying himself - much appreciated.

I recognise those two plants - my favourite silk ones and an excellent choice for goldfish. :)
