Tank cycle - Ammonia not dropping #1
Hey

Any advice would be appreciated on this..

Started almost two weeks ago, using Biomature.
Reached the 10ppm Ammonia level required and ceased adding it to the tank.
The nitrite rose slowly to 2/3ppm and sat there, these last 2/3 days it has dropped. Finally today it is at 0ppm.

However, ammonia is still sat at about 7/8ppm.

Any idea?
I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.

I've not personally used this before but recall from posts here that you to wait for both ammonia and nitrite to read nil.

Worth just checking the tank pH I think. Has it reduced during this two weeks at all? Falling pH due to lack of replenished KH (i.e. no water changes) can stall a cycle.

It will remain static for a while and then suddenly drop to 0 in a few hours. It is normal for it to do this.

Violet - I did a new pH test and it's the same as the original one I did.

Finnipper - you are my lifeline with this technique, I'm so glad you responded. I will persevere :)

Thankies

Re: Tank cycle - Ammonia not dropping #5
Good to check, not the pH then

You started on the 8th September then, to date now on the 22nd, so 2 weeks to date. The ammonia way of cycling tanks takes just shy of 3 weeks (going by notes in my fish keeping journal). It looks like biomature may shave a few days of perhaps then but been interesting following this

Let us know when the tank is good to go.

Also pocs of new inhabitants - we all love pics here

I'm thinking this might be a test kit issue by now. What is the nitrate level compared to the tap water?

They are both the same - 10/20ppm (can't tell in this light)

Re: Tank cycle - Ammonia not dropping #9
So the ammonia has risen, no nitrites or nitrates and nothing happening?

You followed the instructions on how much to add each day.

The pH is the same.

Is the water aerated?

What type of filtration are you using?

Re: Tank cycle - Ammonia not dropping #10
I dosed it exactly with how much I needed each day.

I had nitrites, they peaked at 3ppm then slowly dropped. This didn't start dropping till after I stopped adding the BM.

I have an eheim filtration system.

I have two air stones.

I have two Elodea plants, that are growing nicely.
