unknown fish in our pond #1
Hi,
we have recently noticed some fish in our pond after being here about a year-we haven't got a working pond pump and have ducks so didn't expect anything!....Can anyone identify them for us?
many thanks

I would guess small common carp. But not entirely sure. Does it have barbels on its mouth?

Re: unknown fish in our pond #5
Still think the bigger one is a carp of some kind. But think the smaller one might be a Rudd or Roach, hard to say without a closer shot of it.

How big is your pond? If its a really big pond, I might be tempted to leave them be, they look healthy enough and must be getting enough food naturally. Suppose you could chuck them some koi pellets if you wanted.

Ducks won't bother fish that size. Although they could pollute the water. Really does depend on the size of the pond, planting levels etc.

I would advise against releasing them. You could show the pic to a local angling club and see if they would take them or something, least they would get a sporting chance.

Genuine question all be it probably a common one, but how do the fish get into the pond if not put there by someone?

It always amazes me when folk with even little garden water features end up with frogs and the likes. Where on earth do they come from?

Fish eggs can be carried in on the legs and bodies of birds that have been wading/feeding in water with fish.

Frogs will colonise any ponds they find and can travel a distance. We have young frogs all over our garden every year though we have no pond, nor do any of our near neighbours so they must be travelling a bit to get here.

that pond must be some size the wee one is a wild roach for sure 100%.The big one looks like a carp but for the tail is a bit long and thin.Maybe a wild carp and a koi carp breeding?i wound try a fly rod for the roach just to see if it takes it lol get a pic of that.
