I have 14 juvenile balloon mollies with their mother(they are old enough to not get terrorized by her)in a temporary 20gal. tank. I am moving them to a new 40gal. setup and I need a new alkalinity buffer since I am changing substrates from crushed coral to fluorite(for some java moss and vals). What would you guys recommend for a new buffer?
Having used both, I'd plump for an external any day. They require less cleaning, although it's a bigger job when they are due, mainly as I clean all the pipe work at the same time and they give you loads of room to add extra media.
Not sure a little bag of coral shell would fit that well into the fluval as they seem to be quite streamlined.
Alternatively baggy up the buffer (end of a pop sock/pair of tights) and 'hide' behind strategically placed rock/wood. Not as effective TBH as in the filter where water is pushed through it but an LFS near me does this on tanks where required.
