Seems we have some creative souls in the FK membership so we thought it would be a good idea to start a thread to share any "how to's", "make your own ...", etc. etc. Ideally fish related but any ideas welcome

Gravel vac - a recent thread reminded me of Fishy-Fishy's home made version:

All you need is a small plastic drinks bottle, some tubing and some tape. Make sure the bottle is clean, DO NOT be tempted to use anything like an empty shampoo bottle Drinks bottles are the only way to go

Cut the bottom off the bottle. Cut your tubing to size making sure it is long enough to reach from the bottle, out of the tank, down the side and into a bucket with a bit of slack to spare. Use plumbers tape or gaffer tape to attach some tubing to the top and hey presto - one gravel vac

The diameter of the tubing will affect how fast the water is removed so a medium diameter, about 10mm would probably be best.

This one is possibly best for smaller tanks, for deeper tanks you would need a longer bottle and a wider tube.

Never tried it myself - how were you thinking of going about it?

Think thedragonlord had a go a while back - sandwiching it between 2 bits of mesh - try a site search and you may turn up the thread ...

Probably just a moss and mesh sandwich held together with wire but Im not sure if this method is fish safe. Wire always has sharp edges and I dont want fish getting trapped in/behind the mesh.

This project is currently on hold until my tank can hold water anyway. Just waiting for the sealant to dry now so I can test it :)

Top Tip of the Day

Don't use masking tape to mask the edges of your new sealant. Mine kept peeling and curling up and generally being irritating. I tried ordinary sellotape instead and it works perfectly. Would have been easier with a coloured/matt tape though as its difficult to see.

Plastic cable ties would be safer than wire

Or maybe fishing wire? You can effectively sew with it to make the edges nice and fishproof.

Damn it someone needs to invent fast drying, fish-friendly sealant! So frustrating having to wait days just to see if Ive done a proper job. I hate leaving things unfinished, its going to eat at me untill I can finally put water in it :(
