Apple snails #1
I got some apple snails a few months back , and was unsure of what to feed them ..

I asked and was told, courgette, cucumber , etc ... now i've tried all of these and they just aren't interested ... they just rotted away and made a mess in the tank , so they haven't been eating anything ...

Well , i say that , they obviously are eating something or they would be dead , but they seem to slide around the waterline on the glass and occasionally on the gravel ...

There is no algae on the glass , so God knows what they are eating ...

Anyone got any other ideas ?

The only other inhabitant in the tank is big old Fishy . He killed one just after i got them , but has left the others alone. He sometimes terrorises them though as they slide past on the glass , knocking them off !!

Any other ideas what to feed them as i am getting a bit concerned , don't want them to starve !

I got some algae wafers today ...

I noticed that two of the snails hadn't moved for a couple of days .... now, i have no idea how you tell if one is dead or not , but i had a sniff and presumably , if they smell bad enough to make you retch into the kitchen bin , they are dead ?

Feel a bit bad now , i have one left , i would hate to think that the others have starved to death

Re: Apple snails #4
yup, same as for marine snails. A live one doesn't stink but a dead one really does.

From applesnail.net
Quote:
Apple snails are very easy when it comes to food and they eat almost anything they can tear pieces off and put in their mouth. Vegetables like cucumber, spinach, carrots and lettuce, fish food, dead fishes, other snails and their eggs, algae, brine shrimps, they eat it all. As mentioned before, Pomacea bridgesii does only eat very soft and dead vegetation and can better be feeded with fish food pellets or with cooked vegetables or canned spinach.

I doubt you managed to starve them.

Re: Apple snails #5
Wonder what's killed them then ?

Fishy killed the first one , but these two have died months later and within two days of each other ...

All water parameters are ok. ( i know i am forever telling people not to say that , but they are )

Have you ever used copper based medications in the tank?

No ...

The tank was secondhand when i got it , but it had been run as a coldwater marine tank full of inverts before that ( snails, crabs and stuff ) so i doubt he would have used any copped based meds on it ...

One is still going strong ...
