Re: Newts????? #28
So for anyone else daft enought to put a newt in their tropical tank, don't do it! I am hoping that my sister-in-law has finally learnt her lesson and will do her home work before she buys things in future.

In her defence thought the aquatic shop really shouldn't advise and sell newts to live in people tropical tank as this is obviously cruel to the newt and the other fish in the tank.

Typically when sis went back and spoke with the manager, he claimed that it was a work experience girl who advised her!

Newts and tropicals don't mix! In five days the amonia rose alarmingly in the tank, three guppies went missing (newt dinner?) and her fighter died.

So here endeth the saga.....only I actually quite liked him.....maybe when we move I might have a tank with one in!

as usual thanks for your advice!

Re: Newts????? #29
i wonder if its a paddletail newt? the tail is as long as the body and very flat. they have the orange belly as well and look reddish on the top. i have one and it definately ate my guppies.

if it is it would be fine in a tropical tank i think as mine is in one and so long as i dont keep any fish small enough to fit in its mouth nothing disappears.

paddletails are wholly aquatic, but you must provide floating islands for a sick or stressed newt. they climb out only when theyre ill.
and make sure your lid is tight.

mine eats bloodworm and fish flake and is the picture of health.

You know I think it might have been, she described it as a fan tail to me so could have been!

Love to see it?
