ahhh the art of choosing fish for a tank, I have to say for people setting up new tanks the main rules are:
*never add much at one time
*always keep the water as good as possible
keeping good water is the best way to prevent disease, it is also the best way to cure disease - so to keep fish healthy this is a must.
as for what fish, I would take my time and choose carefully, I would suggest only buying the fish you see and love instantly as tanks soon become full and before you know it you have a tank full of the fish you quite like, but not the ones you really want.
as for adding the first fish, I would make sure the tank is fully cycled
for info on cycling look here and add up to 6 fish every week (oh and dont overfeed)
you will most likely find tetras tend not to have too much trouble ajusting like some more delicate fish.
