carboys as tanks #1
Hi lm new to fish keeping so lm looking for some help
I have an old acid carboy made about 20 years ago of glass, now days made of reinforced plastic. lm thinking of using for a tank set up,
it would only be for small fish such as guppies. I did see one on a tele program but just got a glimpse of it in the back ground being used as cold water set up.
Do any of your members have such a set up or is it not possible to do
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi notlaw and welcome to fishkeeping I would say it is not suitable for goldfish as the neck is not wide enough similar to a goldfish bowl, because its the air service that matters, I am not too sure if it would be suitable for tropical my thought is no, but maybe marc or our other tropical fish keepers can help you more there.

Re: carboys as tanks #4
Would you want to use it as it is, or could you have the top cut off, because I was wondering how you would get a heater and filter through the neck let alone the poor fish?.

Re: carboys as tanks #7
Thanks for the help and makeing me feel welcome in your forum
I still think l would like small fish like guppies and neons, in a 4ft tank with the right plants ect it would look nice.
the position l was going to put the carboy was in an exposed fire place, with the right lighting as well it should make a nice focel point.
so if any of you members have done or have pictures would be nice to see them posted on forum.

Re: carboys as tanks #8
Have you thought about putting plants into your carboy as it would still make a nice focal point then
Also a 4ft tank would give you lots of selection and should look lovely

make an excellant planter, and look good in the fireplace with maybe some spot lights, shame it would look good to,
but not practical.

Or even coloured glass beads, If you like silk plants instead of real plants then you could have display in it, a few choices which will look nice in a fire place
