Hi! I am new here and also new to fishkeeping. I have been cycling my 5 gallon planted tank with no fish and just add fish pellets every 12hrs since May 10. I have been testing the water with api freshwater test kit and I have been getting peculiar results. PH is 7.4. I use API stress coat. I haven’t cleaned nor change water the whole time. I find snails and mosquito larvae and remove them regularly. No heater because our climate is hot. I think i’m also seeing diatoms on the substrate (sand).
May 10 - start cycling May 13 - Ammonia 0.25ppm May 15 - Ammonia 0.25, Nitrite 0.25, Nitrate 0 May 20 - Ammonia 0, same result as days ago May 22 - Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0
Why is my tank seems not cycling? What do I need to do?
Have you added ammonia? If not, that's why there's no cycling. Pellets do't break down into ammonia readily - they are designed not to in order to avoid them polluting the tank. You need to add ammonia to simulate fish waste, and then the good bacteria that process that into nitrite and then nitrate will start to grow and deal with it. This article explains and has an ammonia dosing calculator at the bottom: https://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles ... hless-cycling-article.htm
