Bluish black gelatinous stuff, oh my! #1
Hello,

I’m 16 days into a fish-in, 1 make betta, cycle. I’ve been able to keep the ammonia down below .25 daily. I do 20% water changes every other day.

Today while doing the water change I noted this goo on one of the rocks and a plant. Pics submitted.

Any idea what it is? Should I be concerned? Also, I think I have a green algae problem as well.

Looks like cyanobacteria. Suck it out with a syphon, and cross your fingers it doesn't reappear is it can be very hard to eradicate. Let us know if it keeps coming back.

I pulled the rock out and cleaned it well with a paper towel and water. I put in back in the tank and will keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the information!

I read that one reason it can grow is a dead spot in water movement. I have a muffler on my pump outlet since I read bettas don’t like a strong current.

This morning I removed the muffler and turned the flow toward the back wall. At the moment Blue doesn’t seem inhibited by it. But I will monitor him to make sure.

What about the other green floating algae? Is that just normal build-up? Or should I be concerned?

Thank you in advance!

Nancy

Do you mean the light green stuff attached to the plant? If so that's hair algae - you can just pull it out.

Fishlady,

Yes I was asking about the green hair-like stuff....I've been pulling it out...I wasn't sure if it was a problem or
not.

As always, thanks for the information.. Despite everything, Blue seems to be doing very well in his home
these days. I have you and FCMF to thank for the assistance!
