Fish Tank Size Help #1
I've had fish before, and they've been fine. I have been looking online and seen plenty of different answers when it comes to tank size per fish. These are my first Goldfish and I was checking I was doing a good job.
I have two pearlscales, two butterfly moors and two dojo loaches. They all seem happy and I've never had a problem with them. Yet everywhere I've looked online said that my tank is too small for more than one fancy goldfish. They all our young at the moment (I assume anyway) and I know this size of the tank isn't going to be good enough long term.

I have live plants, sand substrate, a LED light with a built-in air bubble strip, a heater which is only used in the winter if the temp drops too far (always on though and set to 22degrees C I think) and an "Aquael" fan filter. I do water changes every week and feed them a little (like a pinch) twice a day, when I wake up and when I go to bed. The tank is just under 100 Liters. It's a long tank so they have quite a bit of room right now, but they're still small. 90x35x30, length height width (cm) (I think my calculation is right for the volume?)

The loaches have a little cave made with a stone and piece of slate. The fish are all active and swim around looking what I would call happy.
I just want some other opinions on my tank, like I said their all happy and healthy. They only ever got one case of white spot when we introduced one of the loaches.

What it looks like - https://bit.ly/2LxFDpE
Any opinions are appreciated. :)
(Not a great picture and the light keeps floating up but I'm replacing it soon)
(Should probably add that I'm 19 and a student, just because it could add some insight)

Re: Fish Tank Size Help #2
Hi,

People are right, your tank is too small. Those fish grow really fast and can grow really big (You don't see those giantic fish often because most of the time they don't receive proper care and die before growing to full potential size)

For all goldfish type, they need to have food almost constantly. So feeding little is not proper care to be honest. They only seem fine because they are hungry and go crazily active when they see you as potentially they will have food.

If you really want to measure the long term health of your fish.... If you've been keeping them for 1 year, they should have been much bigger than they currently are

Re: Fish Tank Size Help #3
I know that my tank is too small, I was thinking of saving up and getting a 300L tank, if that would be big enough long-term, if not I know where to get a 500L one.
I've had them under 3 months. About 5cm from tip to tail, loaches are under 10cm too.
They still have plenty of room still, so I didn't think of changing tank that soon. But if they need it I'll get it as soon as I can save up.

I have plants that none of the fish have touched, thinking of buying them a moss ball, If they like that I'll keep getting them one, depending on if they break it (I assume they will). I also give them some pellets that stay at the top of the tank if they seem particularly hungry. On occasion, they get bloodworm (defrosted). and when I feed them twice a day they leave some after, But I'll give them food 3 times a day if that's whats best. (Also use high-quality food (I think its high quality, "Aquarian Advanced nutrition)".

Re: Fish Tank Size Help #4
That's a good plan to check out with us if you're giving the fish what they require and what could be improved.

You might find this article helpful too https://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles ... -size-life-expectancy.htm as well as this section https://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/coldwater_articles/ and this https://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/modules/ ... esheets.php?cat=Coldwater

Do you have a liquid-based test kit to measure ammonia, nitrite and nitrates? That would be the key addition to all in your repertoire as it would help inform whether you need to do more frequent or larger water changes by testing the water just before the scheduled weekly water change. Testing the water for these is always the first "go-to" task if a fish is behaving oddly or looking unwell as often these are caused by sudden or long-term decrease in water quality.

What size of Aquael fan filter is it? Goldfish need particularly good filtration so it might be that a larger or second/additional filter is required but we'll advise once we know what you currently have. (It might also mean that you can transfer these filters across to the larger tank once you get it.)

A couple of chopped peas - take shell off and chop each half into smaller morsels - once or twice a week would be a good addition to their diet. This article might also be helpful http://injaf.org/aquarium-fish/the-go ... /goldfish-and-their-diet/

Hope that helps.

That's the one I've got. I think I have some testing stuff in a draw, I'll dig them out and check, if not I'll buy some by Friday.
I am getting an external filter when I get paid on the 12th, going to have both running when it gets here.
(https://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aqu ... s/external/1400lh-1400ef/ was thinking this one, so when I get a bigger tank I shouldn't need to buy a new one.)
After thinking about it a little, I think I'll save that bit longer and get a 500L tank. (I think that should be big enough)
https://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aqu ... 5ft-and-above/520-litres/ is the one I've been looking at.
I really appreciate all the help, I want the best for my little guys and it really helps.
