Hillstream loach? #1
Hi there,

I was hoping that someone is able to confirm what this plec is that I've got...I got it from Pets at Home around 8 months ago and he's been surviving ever since...they had it labelled as a "Hong Kong Plec"

I've done a bit of research, and it does look quite like a hillstream loach I thought.
I was doing a bit more investigating today for another unrelated fish and came across the "Borneo Sucker" which also looks very similar...

Can anyone offer their opinion on what it is please?

Thanks!
Chris

It's all of the above - hillstream loach, Hong Kong plec and Borneo sucker are all common names used for a number of similar fish, grouped arbitrarily as hillstream loaches. Unfortunately just seeing the underside means I can't tell you exactly which species it is, but all have similar needs - cooler water, fast flow, algae to graze on and to be in a group of their own kind.

Thanks for the info, that's interesting!

I've put another photo on this reply.
I do have another of him on the glass side on so you can see a flash of colour in the tail, if that would maybe help as well.

I do seem to get a bit of algae growing in my new tank, and he is much more active now than in the old one!

How many in a group would you say?

My tank is a Juwel Lido 120.

He's definitely one of the Gastromyzon species, most likely Gastromyzon zebrinus. There's detailed information and pics you can compare him to here: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/gastromyzon-zebrinus/
A group of 4 or more is best.
