A little help please #1
Just borrowed some substrate from a mature cycled tank and was wondering where would be best to place it , in the tank in a filtermedia bag or in the external filter taking into account I have fish ?

Is your tank not cycled then? If it's to try to kick-start a cycle, the best place for it is inside the filter as that's where the bacteria live. If it's just in a bag in the tank, the bacteria are not going to move from there to the filter very readily unless you suspend the bag in the filter flow in which case a few may get washed off the gravel and circulated into the filter.

Thank you very much I put a bit in the filter and then a bit on the gravel to try and speed things up I have also bought a seneye water moniter as I keep getting crazy readings on different test kits , one says I have no ammonia and another say I have a slight trace nothing to worry about but best to be safe than sorry
