Is it staying at that level between changes in the tank?

Yes it is - the ph coming out of the tap was ph6 and the same after standing for 24hours. I did another cup of standing water with gravel from his tank added (if you remember) and that rose up to ph8 after 24 hours - so we found out the source of the rising ph in his tank from the tap water.

Thus his tank water should be staying at ph 8 constantly now - i'm doing a 25% water change weekly.

I do have some aquarium salt at home - would it be worth adding some with the next water change to help with his recovery? I read that you shouldn't add the salt in one big go, and do a little each day to bring it up to the amount required for the litres in the tank?

Let's wait for the test results and then we can see what's best

Ok - i'm such a panicker when it comes to Cyril. Do you get like that with any of your fish?

I'm so attached to him, that I've had nightmares and sleepless nights over him when he's been unwell. Last night I dreamt a cat had killed him, and I was balling my eyes out. I'm amazed I didn't wake up in tears -.-

Hehe - glad i'm not alone there.

Well I got home, and with his tank light on inspected the little guy. The red streaks I thought I saw as deep red this morning, don't appear to be anywhere near as bad as I thought they were - so i'm freting less about them now.

Water parameters are as follows:

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 16-18
pH: 8.0

He's had pellets, then some peas tonight (rather a lot of peas too), and he's still vaccing up his gravel for any remnents. I do wonder if I might be underfeeding him because it was mentioned he was of quite a small size?

He has pellets twice a day (about 2-3mm in length), and i'd say about 10-15 of them. He had his dose tonight when the other half got home at 5pm, then at about 6.30 I gave him some peas to mix up his diet (he used to have them a lot for his swimbladder and loved them), and he got about 7 of those which he gulped down.. like I say he's still vaccing away at his gravel like a bottomless pit!

He doesn't sound too bad - if he's eating he must feel reasonably OK. Just keep an eye on the streaks and let us know if they start to look any worse.

Thanks Noodle/Fishlady :)

I shall be keeping my beady eye on him as I always do. The opposite side of his bad tail side has a small hole in it now too - but I have a feeling that had developed before the esha2000 treatment, as its where that deep red line was. I hope that will clear up from the treatment, but i'll be keeping an eye on that too.

Just want to say thanks to everyone again - you're all very helpful :)
