Indoors or out? #1
I have recently set up a small pond (200 gallons) in my garden and have 4 Goldfish. I am a novice at pond and fish keeping.
Could you tell me if I leave the fish in the pond over winter or is it best to bring them indoors into a tank or something.

Hi Sandy,

Welcome to our forum.

It really depends on your locale and how harsh is your winter. Koi and goldies can winter outside but they need 3 feet (depth) of water if the weather is harsh (especially if the pond freeses over). You might be able to put a cover over the pond or put in an aquarium heater which will make a big difference. But if they can be relocated indoors over winter, it might be a good idea too.
I know enough to know that I don't know enough

Hello there As captk mentioned it depends on where about you live, in the UK normally the fish are ok outside all year round as long as your pond is deep enough so as not to totally freeze over, so can I ask if you are in the UK or else where

Hi

I'm in the north east of England. My pond is only 2 feet deep. Maybe I should bring them indoors for winter.

Thanks for the advice

You should be ok see this I copied from the gardeners world page

As a general rule of thumb, a pond should be 60cm (2ft) deep if you want plants and fish in it. Water that’s too shallow is vulnerable to evaporating in warm weather and freezing in winter.

also this says 18 inches http://www.worldofwater.com/depth.htm

Can I ask if you have any plants in your pond and or a filter

2 ft is fine for goldys, but 3ft is needed in scotland/very near the scottish border 3ft is bare minimum for koi preferably 5ft
