Re: White Cloud Mountain minnow #96
The RSPCA state that 45 litres is the minimum amount of water required for a single Betta - a fish that's in general not terribly active. Anything less is considered inadequate for the legal requirements to provide pet animals with conditions that allow good health and natural behaviour.

WCMM need to be kept in shoals of at least 6 fish for the sake of their mental health and are active swimmers who need a reasonable amount of swimming space to display their natural behaviour. Given their requirements for being in a large group and their need for room to stretch their fins 60 litres as a minimum is perfectly reasonable.

Re: White Cloud Mountain minnow #98
Not at all. Some fish need to be kept in a group as if not, they become very stressed and therefore have a poor quality of life and are more susceptible to disease due to compromised immune systems.

You will find that once again the RSPCA states that fish who naturally live in shoals must be be provided with a group of their own kind when in captivity in order to satisfy this natural requirement. To do otherwise is seen as cruelty. Mental health is just the most straightforward term to describe this.

Re: White Cloud Mountain minnow #99
May be better to start a new thread going forward than adding to one from 2006!

Yep, Noodle is right

The RSPCA advocates 45 litres min (that?s usually the min for a single male Betta).

Given you had 2 goldfish and a loach/plec (?) in 36 litres, an immature (but completely reversible situation, if you?d chosen to follow the FK advice back then) death was highly likely at some point. That?s why we urged an upgrade some time ago and water tests.

Perhaps a bit of bravado, perhaps just wanting to illicit a racy post, I?m not sure of your angle here, but I don?t believe for one moment that you were ?lolling? much when your 2nd goldy became ill and died. These fish produce huge amounts of poop and should grow to a foot or more, hence bigger tanks. The fact the loach/plec hasn?t grown now suggests stunting is occurring due to the tank size (not good).

Are you still averse and anti all water testing kits? Another problem I?m afraid, as water toxins are clear, you can?t see what?s happening in the tank unless you do these. They would have saved the deceased fish I?m sure.

No, 6 small shoaling fish such as WCMM need the space that 60 litres provides. Not rocket science, just accepted in fishkeeping circles by everyone.

FK doesn?t pander to keeper whims, we only have the fish and their wellbeing at heart and will always be honest. Good luck.

Re: White Cloud Mountain minnow #100
No of course I wasnt laughing when the fish died( it was a shibunkin, not a goldie) but i just find the idea if a fish getting depressed humorous-they have like a 30 second memory. And for the record both the existing goldie AND the plecalike are thriving without water treatments, other than anti chlorine.
