Re: Apple snail information #11
some apple snails lay eggs under water, like the spixis, which mine are, do you know the scientific name for the ones you have?

Re: Apple snail information #13
Pretty old thread, but I'm after some help

Dads Tropical, Juwel Vision 180, has 3 apple snails in there.

Sometimes, they will just stay where they are in the shell, and the bottom of the snail itself, will look like a flat tile.

See attached picture

So, what is he doing?

Ben

Re: Apple snail information #14
I've just bought a couple of apple snails and have a different sort of problem.

The goldfish were eating something at the bottom of the tank the other morning and i thought 'what the hell is that?' and then I realised. They had gotten the apple snaill out of it's shell and were eating it!

Anyone else have goldfish that think they are piranha's?

Eeewwww - Howard's big old goldfish did that too, naughty fishies I've seen mine eat pest snails and they eye up the malaysian trumpet snails now and then but the MTS are too quick to retreat and shut their trapdoors to get eaten. Goldies are omnivores so pretty much anything they can get their chops round is fair game.

Re: Apple snail information #16
I've got quite a few apples snails, started with just two which recently passed away but fortunately I missed their last batch.

I've had loads of different apple snails before, I can't say any of them smelt when they died, I probably got rid of them quickly though.

One of them died and didn't float, big moma, uncertain if she was dead I left her but her remains were eaten, she didn't smell either.

At the moment I have 3 of that batch living with my goldfish which aren't bothered by the fish at all.

I have the rest living in my tropical community which aren't bothered by anything either and will eventually go to the shop with a select few remaining with me to breed again.

They are quite cool, they move in a pack and demolish any left overs or dead plant leaves.

Re: Apple snail information #17
If they're apple snails it should look like a great big lump of badly mixed flour & water.
Ideally it would be above the water line out of the way of predators but if they are apple snail eggs it would be nice to know if they hatch underwater!
Good luck with 'em.

Re: Apple snail information #19
sounds like copper, it's worth getting a test for metals in your water.......... Or salt, endlers live happier lives in brackish water but I put salt around my lettuce in spring to fry the little blighters when they approach. There may be info for Brackish snails online
