Re: Best external filter for 160 litre tank? #21
Went with the Fluval 305, was a bit cheaper than the tetratec (I got it from Swallow Aquatics, after Frances mentioned the sale) and is rated for tanks up to I think 300 or 350 litrtes and has a maximum of 100 lph turnover.

Ooh I've spent way too much money today

You won't be sorry. I have two of them and they are so easy to use. The aquastop makes connecting and disconnecting a doddle, and the only thing to watch is the little ball in the intake sometimes gets leaves stuck in it which reduces the flow. I have got into the habit of rinsing mine with each water change. Enjoy your new filter!

Re: Best external filter for 160 litre tank? #24
External filter has just arrived so I will attempt to set that up. But first, I should probably go to work. Other half answered the door and carried it upstairs handed it to me and just said 'How big?! And you can get bigger? To filter what, a lake?' Hehe

Jay, I need to speak to dad and ask him if he fancies coming with me to ask for glass quotes, he's a plumber and is used to dealing with Doves (builders merchant) at least and probably a few other places too. He still doesn't seem too enthusiastic about the whole thing but I'm working on him. As soon as I get quotes I'll PM you

You can get the hose from Ebay if you wish.

Ebay

Or here..

Aquatics On-Line

Or maybe your lfs, not all of them carry Tetratec Spares, but may have hoses & spraybars to fit.

Hi Jimbo

Not sure that filter is is suited for your tank TBH (still 60 litres or so? unless you have upgraded perhaps and you profile needs updating?) The Tetra Ex700 is an external filter for tanks circa 250 litres.

Running too big an outfit may cause capillary leakage through the silicone seals (i.e mopping up water and tank safety from a structural point of view if the sealant fails) and goldy swimming issues too, in such a high turnover. Just a thought!

That was not fun! And now my hood doesn't fit on. I couldn't fit the clips over the back of the tank as there is a glass sort of shelf thing in the way. I'm gonna have to cut some of the metal away on the hood so I can fit it on. I'd leave it off but the cat likes the look of the fish too much. I think I'd like a new tank sooner rather than later :)

Violet, your last comment about too large a filter has me worried. I bought the Fluval 305 which is for aquariums up to 300 litres, but my tank is only 160. Have I made a mistake?

Squish, that filter is fine - relax - double filtration is recommended here for goldies, given your size tank, all is fine for now

Jimbo to date, has a smallish tank for similar fish, so extra care is needed. A big filter would blast them all over the place and potentially cause water leakage.
