Hair Algae in Pond! #1
Help!

Well they say things come in threes and i would say this in my third problem within a week.

I have noticed this morning that the side of my pond has started getting that horrible hair algae and not too sure on how to go about treating the pond.

I preferably do not want to use chemical treatments but if i have to i will!

Is there a particular fish that will get rid of it or not?

i do have a Sturgeon so will need to be careful with what treatments i do use.

Look forward to your answers

The dreading blanket weed, no ones safe from it :D

You can get electronic devices but the decent ones start at ?100. Unforuntly chemicals are best approach unless your willing to spend alot in one.

Look for "Cloverleaf Blanketweed Anwear" suppose to be the best one of the market and where i work, ive had many good reports on it and it is safe for sturgeon. However it doesnt kill whats already it there just controls it and stops it coming back or growing more, so you'll need to remove as much as possible

Ok cool thank you for the info

I know it sounds mad but would it be worth getting in the pond and cleaning the sides to free it of the worst algea then start the treatment or would this be a waste of time?

Do you have a website of where you work and i could order it online?

I use this product from Hydra International:

http://www.hydra-aqua.com/05a-pond---blanket-weed---quartz-2-c.asp

You can see the blanket weed dying and it will all be gone in 1 week!

I put a few rocks in a five gallon bucket for ballast and then gently pull the hair algae to the bucket hand over hand. The algae sticks to itself fairly well, and hence it's possible to get most of the algae in a fairly short time.

Fredrick, what electronic device prevents or kills attached algae?

Blagdon make an electronic device, but it takes a long time to get going.

The Hydra International product is safe for all fish and plants.

Depending on the chemistry of your water, it may go cloudy for a couple of days on first use, but after that it will be fine.

You may also get a layer of light foam, but that only lasts an hour or so.

I love this product. I use it in small maintenance doses weekly and have a completely blanket weed free pond.

Occasionally there is a regrowth, but a quick sprinkle of the granules kill that off rapidly.

Interesting, but it's hard to imagine that RF that would kill algae would be completely harmless to everything else. It disrupts calcium ions? I think I'll stick with my bucket for now.

Re: Hair Algae in Pond! #10
Hi,

I saw the Blagdon device for the first time this weekend and didn't believe the blurb on the box so left it. All that talk of disrupting calcium ions and having to wrap the wire around the pump hose didn't ring true. I would be interested to know if it actually works...

Up until now I have just been manually removing the stuff, but I would like an easier life Might just try the Hydra International stuff mentioned here.
