Improving Lighting economically #1
Hi Gang

I have a lighting hood in built whic holds 1 38w actinic an 1 38w white T5, I have 4ft of moon LEDs and I feel my light level is a littl low (55gal/250litre tank with approx 5ft2 surface area)

I believe the optimum is 110-120w T5 (not sure what the equivalent is for Halides..but to be honest didn't want to venture into halides)

My tank top is split into 3 parts (rear flap, lighting panel and front feeding flap/panel). The rear panel is angled at about 45degrees as the skimmer pump/pipes vibrates otherwise. I dd drill holes but it still makes a horrendus noise...looks ok angled.

I hope to improve the lighting level without abandoning my existing hood and maybe take advantage of the rear flap being angled.

I have considered getting a 'hang on' type lamp fitting either shining into the flap 'void' or over the rear of te tank through the glass say around 2-3inches below the water line.

My question(s) is(are).....

Is it ok to shine through the rear glass..any cons? or try and get a clip on shining through the rear slot?

and if so or not...any suggestions?

cheers

I have looked on ebay and there seems to be a variety of clip ons but not sure tis will work with my tank.
I have also considered adding a T5 tube on the wall behind the tank (say mid height) to shine 'through' the tank from the rear?

Dont shine light through the back of tank as this will make the fish disoriented as sunlight is always above.

Hope this helps spheon

Re: Improving Lighting economically #5
sorry for not responding and thanking..been away a while

I have a fully enclosed hood that came with my tank, the rear flap is left up to allow the skimmer pipes etc into the tank...doesnt look too bad.

I was considering shining something say 45degrees into the tank from the rear of the tank...?

my tank....doesn't look as 'dead' as that now
