Beat Up Fish #1
I have a pond with 6 goldfish in it. I noticed that one of the Comet goldfish looks beat up. He may be rubbing his scales against rocks. All the other fish look fine. I also noticed that of the three comets he is the only Comet without a white tale. His tale is much smaller and orange? Can someone tell me if what I should do about this fish hurting itself? Thanks

Hi Skasmo,
Can you tell us the size of the pond and the water test results?
Is his tail frayed or just smaller? Any other signs like spots, discolouration, redness, ulcers?
Do you know the sex of the goldfish?
A photo might help too if possible, if you can post this extra information I'll nudge our ponds guru into having a look

Pond is about 1700 gallons. The water levels are all normal and the fish had no ulcers or discolorations. I will try to get a picture

Hey,

Sorry for the delay,

It could be a few things;

Spawning damage, the males will often cause quite a bit of damage during spawning and then the fish can "flick" just as the damaged skin is irrating it.

Or it could be a possible parasite problem.

I persume you've tested your water?

Ive tested the water and it is only one fish that is a little beat up. I think it may be spawning. The one fish looks a little fat too it may be pregnant.

Well fish dont get pregnant, instead they are full of eegs which they release so just keep an eye on it and when it gets slimmer then they have proberly spawned

With the fat one, the scales are stuck out at all?

Re: Beat Up Fish #8
So I have tons of baby fish now. Some are colorful but most are grey or black. Will they become colorful as they grow. They have been swimming around for a couple of weeks now and the bigger fish seem to ignore them. Also what do I do with them if I end up having way too many fish?

Re: Beat Up Fish #9
Thats a strange as usualy goldfish will eat their own young. I wouldnt do anything, some will survive and some will die that way its usaully takes a few years for the pond to get over stocked.
