Re: Raised Pond made from railway sleepers #14
hi, stretcherbond is the name for the way house bricks are laid. with all joints overlaping incliding ther corners. as for the spikes as far as you can. even though the sleepers are heavy the outward presure from the water will be quite high. i would spike the each layer through to the ground in a differnt place but all the way through to make sure its solid. i konow i was building a retaining wall but same things apply

hi have you checked out this post
http://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/modules/ ... hp?topic_id=20783&forum=8
i made a similar pond last year to what your doing but changed my mind from railway sleepers to fence strainer posts at 10 ft long i concreted the bottom log into place first then dug the hole after, 2ft below ground and 2 ft above the logs are laid in a brick pattern then drilled and screwed through with 600 mm bolts its never moved at all even when the ice was 40mm thick on top i put sand on the bottom and 2"polystyrene sheets from b&q for 50p an 8x4ft sheet i did the sides aswell

That is a reali nice pond and i think looks better than the railway sleepers, Did you put steel pins into the ground as well or did the concrete hold it on its own ?

Re: Raised Pond made from railway sleepers #20
ooooooooo got a nice mountain in back ground would look nice with those sleepers embedded in the grass go for it just rember just make it bigger than you want it to be when finished cos you will lose about 20% - 25% of the area you dig out when you have lined it ie if you want it to be 1.25m deep go 1.5m deep cos when you put sand and form in bottom you will be surprised how much room it takes up and if you are stuck for length and width go deeper to get the volume
hope i have helped
