transporting fishys #1
Hi All,

Okay this will probably stir up a lot of debate, but how long can you transport a fish for? I know you can mail order them and they get sent overnight, so how do they do that and make the fish arrive alive? I am asking cause i just went to Maidenhead aquatics in Sefton (near my soon to be parents in law) and saw some puffer fish i really REALLLY want. But i live in Glasgow so they would have to be transported for 6 hours or so to get them home and in a q tank. The guy in the shop said 1 hour tops for transport, but as i said i know they get sent overnight. My thoughts were that as long as its well padded in newspapaer in a cool bag (for insulation), and prehaps if i add a oxygen tab or two, it should be fine to get home.

So advice need from you experienced types who know stuff.

Cheers

Tom

PS i would be getting 3-4 figure of eight puffers that are currently about 1.5 cm each.

Others will know more detail about this. My thoughts:

I suspect they said 1 hour tops because they do not bag with oxygen. Not sure about the effect of oxygen tablets.

As well as oxygen, you would also want to add Amguard or similar to the water, and get a heat pack to go in the coolbox with them.

You could check the price for fish + delivery from Wildwoods
or Wholesale Tropicals?

GOSH. Wildwoods have the figure eights for ?11.95 EACH plus P+p which is also a lot. The maidenhead i looked at had them for 3.50 or 2 for a fiver. Amazing the price differential on the same fish. I might PM LHG as he is the official guru.

Re: transporting fishys #4
You can transport them for about 24 hours on 5 provisos, heatpack, ammolock, and a breathable bag, all packed in styrofoam to take the worst of the edge off the temp shift and shocks, and to keep them completely dark. They must not be fed at least 6 hours prior to transport.

Without all that, average 3 hours tops, with a water volume at least 30 times that of the fish, and with the same of air.

Most fish in standard bagging without 02 wouldnt be too good if kept bagged much over an hour. Labyrinth fish might last 4-6 hours.

Prefer to pick em up myself, never like posting fish, especially not cichlids or larger fish.Theres no guarantees. Most stockists and importers get high death rates.

Cheers v much LHG. Top guy

So what does a breathable bag look like? I guess the usual LFS ones aren't as they seem to be polythene or something. Or maybe they are breathable???? Plastics not really my thing And as for heat packs the only ones i know of are the sort you get for muscle injurys, would they do or are they a bit warm? Would the O2 tabs help? My brain hurts

I've actually got some breathable bags somewhere, if I can find them I'll post you a few, I'd completely forgotten about them.
You know the thing with them is to fill full, unlike bagging in ordinary bags.

edit: cursory look in fish cupboard didn't turn them up, you can get them on eBay along with heat packs etc.

yup, take a looky.

http://www.novalek.com/kordon/articles/breathing_bags.html

o2 tabs should only be used if they dont cause a massive ph hike, or your transporting hardwater species, most dont dissolve gradually enough to be useful for bagging, its all "whoomph" then nothing. Hypersaturation, then bugger all for hours.

So how would one go about a longer term of transportation...48 hours say?
