Oh S**T!!! #1
I think I've come very close to suffocating Ramses . His filter needed to be cleaned today, because the outflow was faltering, so I cleaned the media in the middle canister, reassembled it, turned it on, and forgot about it. . . Having already turned the lights in the tank off.

That was this afternoon - about 3.

About an hour ago, I noticed I hadn't seen Ramses for a while. He's usually swimming about quite happily, until the room goes dark when he settles down in his corner for the night. About 10:10, I came offline from this site, turned the computer off, and noticed that his tank seemed oddly quiet (he has an Aquaball 2210 and I can usually hear the air bubbles). What with not seeing him for a while, I went to check he was OK. Couldn't see him, but the filter caught my eye. No sign of any air bubbles and very little disturbance No wonder my little guy was subdued!! Took the filter out of the water, intending to leave it there, turned it up to just under full power and decide to check the air diffuser attachment. It's fine . . . and thankfully, so is Ramses - he's swimming round like nothing was ever wrong but OMG what a fright . . . the lights are on now - as well as the diffuser and the filter on full power.

Definately lucky I checked on him. Doesn't seem any the worse for wear, but I'm still getting over it. Typical really, innit?

Jen: Here's one of the more recent pics of him. To get his full colour, I have to turn the lights off and hope Ramses comes to the front and poses. He'll come to the front all right, but he doesn't usually stay still long enough to get a decent pic of him

Hi Tetralinz,

Whats your thoughts on a newby taking on a tropical tank.

I know im still new to fish keeping and thank god my fish are now in tip top shape and loving their new tank, (picture in the gallery)im still waiting for my API kit to arrive!!!! 2 weeks now, still using the tetra 2 kit which is giving me a very basic reading but the levels are in the lowest colour bracket so im cool not stressing any more.
The interest gained has really sparked my imagination and i would like to look into tropical what do you think, any advise

Jen

Re: Oh S**T!!! #9
There's not that much difference between tropical and coldwater - except the heater. Trops need one.

If you're going to get a tropical tank, go for small shoalers like Cherry Barbs, Tetras, Rasboras, Golden Barbs, etc to start off with. They're pretty forgiving of beginners' mistakes. Not wishing to put you off but if you're thinking about cichlids like Ramses, they're usually intermediate-level fish. I got Ramses and Aries (my veiltail Ram - sadly no longer with us) after 3-4 months

EDIT// The fish in my avatar is a female Cherry barb.
