is my crab dead :( #1
hi all,

i have 4 red clawed crabs since Tuesday, 2 fairly big ones and 2 littler, today one of the little ones was found upside down and very pale. after a few pokes there seems to be no movement. has it passed away during molting? i've heard people suggest iodine supplements perhaps i should invest in them?

Don't add anything you can't test for !!

What size tank is it , how long has it been set up , what are your water readings ?

How long did you acclimatise the crabs for when adding them to your tank ?

hi howard,

thanks for the reply.

the tank is 20L, pic below
http://img255.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mytankwa3.jpg
the water is higher though just below the top of the bogwood.
about 20*C not sure on test results need to do them.

tank setup last saturday and added a de-choline, de-nitrate and de-something else but dont have have the bottle to hand.
crabs acclimatized for a couple of hours before adding, they seemed happy throughout the week, eating etc...

lizroberts mentioned in another post molting shortly after a new tank can be very stressful, from the fact it was very pale and translucent do you think this sounds the cause

Hi there,

Sorry , i was under the impression it was a marine tank ...

I don't know a lot about freshwater crabs i'm afraid ...

You are right about them needing iodine for their shells ( at least in a marine setup ) , i would imagine the same applies to FW ...

We really need your water parameters , and the same adage still applies ... if you can't test for it, don't add it.

best of luck

H

That is most likely to be the cause as i've lost a few like that. Don't worry though as long all the others are fine and all is going well it will be fine!!

hi all,

sorry its been a while, but just thought i'd share the good news (belated as it is...) the crab wasn't in the great tank in the sky, it had molted and the person watching them for me assumed it had, when it had just molted!

2 successfully molted now so all is good, thanks guys!

hi , i used to keep red claw crabs and thre is a good chance that its only th skin that you were looking at. the real crab has probably gone of to hide somwhere until his shell hardens
