Have a look for second hand tanks on ebay - limit your search in relation to your post code as you will most likely have to go and collect. I got my 4ft rena tank & cabinet for £189 on ebay, and lots of other people have got terrific bargains
(Pic to give you an idea - no fish in it when taken)

I got my 4' x 2' x 2' tank from ebay for £10.50. No stand, lights or filter but it does show that with patience, persistance and a little luck you can get some real bargains.

A couple of important points to ask though.
1. Does it leak at all? (repairs can be made but if its a leaky tank it should be massively discounted)
2. Have they used copper based medication in it? (if yes then you wont be able to keep inverts)
3. Are there any scratches, chips or cracks?

Take a look at freecycle. There are a lot of people who have fish and don't have the time or space to look after them, and give away the tanks. That's how i got mine.

I also find small garden centers that sell fish often have quite good bargains on tanks.
