overwhelming excitement - fry! #1
I was just poking around in the tank cabinet to find fish food for Linz to try her fussy eater on and dropped a bit into the tank to check how quickly it sinks - when the MOST miniscule head poked out of one of Arthur's shells. So exciting! Not sure how many there are (bit worried now I might have hoovered some up the other day when cleaning sand) - will have to spend evening sitting by tank waiting for action, will have to miss Extras.
Now got to rename Arthur. If they are old enough to be reproducing I guess I can take their relative size as indicator of sex, so have def. got 2 males and 3 females, one don't know.

Nice one cathie
The fish must be settled to a certain extent if they're spawning.
Not like convicts behind the bike sheds.

Result
Central Americans; once they pop they don't stop!

Re: overwhelming excitement - fry! #5
the first batch, you'll remember that excitement for a very long time your almost guarenteed lots more batches now as long as you dont mess with them too much and they dont reach a population max mine reach their max a while back, hence why i was going to thin the population down etc

but a point about the messing with them too much, i always moved the shells from one quarter of the tank, hoovered that sand with a gravel vac, and then returned the shells and they kept breeding, i'd rotate the quarter each week so that each area was done on a monthly cycle worked really well for me and my fish

Re: overwhelming excitement - fry! #8
I can't believe how excited I am. At least no one has laughed at me publicly!
I can count 3 out at once but there might be more as they zip in and out of shells so quickly. They have already picked different shells!

TDL: when you move the shells in one area to clean the sand, where do you put them - piled up in another area? I try to just edge them aside but not v efficient.

Re: overwhelming excitement - fry! #9
you got it i just pile them ontop of each other, if they have young fry then i'll skip their section as they will be big enough to keep out of the way after 4 weeks
