Tea Tree and Salt treatments ... #1
Hi

I was wondering if anyone knows how to calculate the amounts to put into an aquarium?

I'm sure Fishyfeet has mentioned these treaments before.

Thanks

When you say teatree is that melafix or what you make yourself like fishyfeet does

its the same thing goldy melafix is tee tree oil and distilled water, see the bottle contents, the calulation i use based on melafix is 1% of melaleuca oil per 99%
water, so the bottle holds 480ml i put it 4.8ml of oil.
Does that make sense, you need to get hold of hazzy really,
cos he just drops it straight in his tank, ive emailed him, so will post as soon as he replies. di

I knew it was teatree Di but wasn't sure if you added anything else to it besides water, and if a fishkeeper didn't have a melafix bottle then they wouldn't know the correct ammount to mix well I know I wouldn't anyway so thanks for that

its 1% goldy, get a jug and fill up to 500ml and add 5 mil
tee tree oil, hey presto, melafix, about quarter of the price. di

Re: Tea Tree and Salt treatments ... #6
just got this message from hazzy

dosage for tee tree oil

if adding to tank on general water change = 1 drop per gallon
if used as treatment say in q/tine tank = 2 drops pergallon
not rocket science but when adding the 2 drops don't do it all in one go
add say half the amount you should let it get into the water and circulate for a few mins
then add a few drops at a time until you get to the required
dose, the reason for this is if you add to much the water will start to foam up.
it wont harm anything but can be messy if it does foam.

I based the above findings on my tank which is 160 uk gallons so the odd few drops each way don't make any difference - but say on a 10gallon q/tine tank its easy to overdose

This is probably a stupid question, but where do you buy the pure tee tree oil from??

Presumably when you make it to a 1% concentration, that is the same strength as melafix so you can just dose according to the instructions on the melafix bottle?

I use melafix occasionally, but it is very expensive, so making the home-made stuff would be great.

Thanks,
Ben

Actually, I think I have just found the answer to my question. Is this stuff ok?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl ... 1277&item=5564721300&rd=1

This would mean I could make 5 litres of melafix for less than £5! A little bottle of melafix costs nearly a fiver at my local shop.

thats it exactly ben, both the type and the dosage, i find it easy to make up melafix as it states and then dose as per the bottles instructions, i just refill the bottle, that way i can add too many drops. di

If I can make 5 litres for £5, then why does melafix sell for £5 for 120mls??

In fact, if I sell my 5 litres, at the same price as melafix I could sell it for over £200!

Anyone fancy any homemade melafix - only £4 for 120mls
