Re: Newbie Fish Keeper Needs Help With Ulcers #33
The extenal treatment I have been using is by a company called TAP and the product is called Aqua Swap

It's described by the manufacturer as:

A unique topically applied spray antiseptic solution for treating fish externally. Aqua Swab should be applied directly to ulcers, wounds, sores, scrapes, damaged eyes and other miscellaneous external fish disorders. Aqua Swab is more effective than in-situ treatments due to its direct application.

Using a product like bonjela never even crossed my mind, even though it's a really well known ulcer treatment! I haven't actually got any in the house at the moment, but I'll call in at the chemists tomorrow morning and apply some on the wounds of the effected fish before I go on holiday.

When i apply the bonjella, should I just put some on the end of my finger and carefully cover the whole wound?

You have to wash your hands when you apply it to babies gums and yes, you use your finger tip.
I have used it before on a mouth ulcer myself and I can't remember if it stings or not?
I will go find out though as this may cause a problem....
brb!

Answer:

Yes, in a toe curling hair straightening kind of fashion!

yes it does - the newer the tube the less it stings though.

Answers from my mates on parenting forum!

Assume it will also sting the fish, making him flap all over the shop?

Re: Newbie Fish Keeper Needs Help With Ulcers #36
I remember using it before and it stining like mad. I guess fish feel pain too.

If it will just casue the fish too flap around this won't be too bad as I can hold them in a damp towel to stop them thrashing around (or is this a bad thing too?) and then put them back in the water.

But is there any chance that the 'pain' induced to the fish due to the bonjela could harm the fish?

It depends where your opinions lay, i willnt go into my personal opinion however the aqua swab would sting if fish can feel pain so to be honest i willnt worry about it, and when ive use bonjela (on myself ) its never hurt only when it touchs the ulcer.

Can i make myself clear here, bonjela will not cure it alone, you will need to use the aqua swab first and then use bonjela as on fish i doubt the effectiveness on curing it, its used by anglers just as a waterproof mild anti bacterial barrier to prevent infection of the hook site.

Also when you appeal the bonjela make sure the aqua swab is dry and then make sure the site is also dry and appeal

Re: Newbie Fish Keeper Needs Help With Ulcers #38
Good point about the aqua swab stining when I spray it onto the fishes wounds, the fish have never reacted badly when I've applied it so far so i guess they can't be too bothered about the stinging associted with the tratement.

The only issue I think I will have with your recomendation is allowing the aqua swab to dry before putting the bonjella on top of the wound. The aqua swab is a liquid spray and will a take a few mins to dry (i think), how long it is safe to keep the fish out of the water for?

Also have you resolved the problem of the high pH as that could be cause, and without first correcting the cause the problem will never go away. Is there any concrete any where in contact with the water or near the water, e.g. paving slabs, concrete on water falls etc.?

Re: Newbie Fish Keeper Needs Help With Ulcers #40
They would be ok however they would already be stressed as it is so i willnt any to chance it, bet thing to do is just to make the spray slighty tackty, so appeal it, wait half a min and then just lightly press a towel on the treat to take up any excess treatment around and on the ulcer
