where is everyone #3
Now that the nano element has closed down, can you tell me where everyone's gone?
There's been no activity on here for ages and I'm assuming you've all moved to another community, I was wondering where?
Thanks

Re: boyu 550- pos improvements #4
Thanks for the reply
Got two powerheads in the main tank, mainly aimed at rock.
Got the full spray bar on pointed at two different angles through the surface.
You think the deflecot and tank and the powerhead on surfce might be better.
Did wonder about the rubble gathering bits, hence why I wondered about in the external as it would be easier to rinse through.
So instead of adding another pump, you upgraded the one you have, will have a look see if the maxijet is small enough.
But if that's the case I need some advice on getting the flow through the two bags in chmber three, they just sit on the bottom at the moment. The scum's def thicker in the chambers at the back.
Def still got two red hermits, there was a third but not seem him in a while. I also got an emerald about two weeks back but hes darn good at hiding.

boyu 550- pos improvements #5
Hi, My tanks ticking along, been running for nearly two years now and successfully moved house with it.
Can't keep snails alive for love nor money, but otherwise livestock is ok.
I'm looking at some improvements though.
I do have some algae issues, green hair and a rusty slime velvet type covering occassionaly.
Neither do I think there's enough movement in the back of the tank.
I use white wool in the first chamber, skimmer, that I'm not truly happy with in second, heater and phos remover in theres then uv and stock return pump in the last.
Live rock in the tank.
I also have a slight oily scum on the surface of the water.
I've dropped the tank level so that the water goes through the comb, but not helping much and the line of water drives me nuts lol.
I was considering an extra pump in the back, but now wondering if I could add an old aqua one external filter?
See if I can get some live rock rubble to add either at the back or in the filter and move the phos and carbon pver to filter coz it doesn't do much good where it is.What kinda issues would I be looking at with the lack of light if any?
Anyway I'd like some opinions and advice please, on what and how to do it. Or if someone knows something better.
Also if anyone kow where I can get rubble at a good price.
thanks

Re: algea and fish advise #6
I can't advise, but I can sympathise.
I have exactly the same problem.
Mine's not a new tank either and the red algae came from nowhere and has just gone mad.
So yes any and all advice greatfully read

Re: feather duster #7
Hi, I believe they shed their feathers due to stress and or starvation.
I know folks round here are going to ask for your water readings and likely whats in the tank and your feeding regime.
Can't tell you about a time I'm afraid, still learning myself.
Good luck

Re: boyu 550 vents #8
I'm trying something a little different at the moment.
I've got all the vents open, a strip of filter wool running the depth of the first chamber and I've moved my skimmer into the secong chamber.
Going to close one of th vents I think, see how that goes.
Have also purchased the 310 skimmer. Hoping it might do something noticeable just as soon as I buy a plug adapter for it. Never got very far with the original one.

Re: mantis epidemic ? #9
Yeah, they're cute now at this size. Really loaud though, unless there's a mummy hiding in there somewhere.
They look to be on 2 bits of rock, large bits obviously and think I might find swapping difficult at LFS.
How much impact would fresh bathing one piece make?
No guarantees I'd get them all anyway and I'd feel evil. But I don't want them killing everything else as they grow up, it's only a boyu 550 for space so gonna get cramped.
