'organism' replenishment #3
Hi Everybody

I have had my main marine tank now setup almost 2 years with mostly success

I had a ploom of red algae and have seemed to get on top of it and eliminated 95% with the minor weekly clean now the only requirement...stats are perfect and I am in the zone with routine changes etc that water changes etc are second nature and I perhaps have become lazy....I do fully check things every few months but it seems the tank has matured well.

At the moment I have fowlr system and now want to introduce soft/hard corels - any suggestions/help?

and to my main point....

Most mythrax, isopods, tube feathers etc have now died off or been eaten and without replacing expensive live rock/sand with difficulty does anyone know how the micro life can be replenished or if anyone supplies such items?

I can of course purchase crabs/critters and recently having my cleaners die off (natural life expectancy I think) I need to replace them. I seemed to have naturally got to a balance with the hermits and found I have limited success with snails (not I need them now the tank seems to stay quite clean - and I am mindful they all do need enough of a food source)

I am hopefully moving house soon - so I can part replace the sand to minimise the nitrate increase and replenish that but it would be good to have 'bottled' micro-organisms to add as a one off replenishment - I love watching the small nano world as much as the fish!

Any advice and help would be gratefully accepted on both subjects.

thanks in advance Sph

Lamp replacement #6
Hi Everyone

It's come to that time where lamp life is coming to an end and I am preparing to purchase new ones...

The online 'direct lighting' places etc seem much cheaper and in most cases I can find the UV Vectra filter lamp replacements with no problem.

I gather (and please correct me if wrong) that a standard T5 lamp with >5000k will suit for the 'white' light and therefore a lamp with 850 coding or greater would suffice 8 indicating triphosphor (T5) and 50 being 5000k.

I have investigated nanometers and have established that a 420nm Actininc lamp (normal LFS stock) is at 10000k, this doesn't read true with what I have investigated - I feel that 400 is around 7500k - therefor would a 870+ lamp suffice or is there something special with it (I assume the kelvin automatically makes it blue?) - comparing costs the LFS seems to be around 300% more expensive!

Any advice appreciated and any lamp direct store that can be recommended would be welcomed too. I have found a few but none seem to 'stock' everything.

thanks in advance

Re: Aquascaping a foam wall #7
I assume you mean within the tank itself? - expanded or expanding? most aerosol can foams are polyurethane and some have even been known to have traces of cyanide!

As its a foam it will tend to float too....I dont think I would use it or consider it as most also break down under UV light and it would be a serious chemist that would know the full reaction risks with all the mineral traces we have in marine environments. It would tend to be a sponge for some too (maybe?).

As a last resort whatever you choose, if you do go for it check the COSSH sheet for its chemical content and ensure what reactions each of the chemical ingredients will react with salt/calcium/nitrate etc etc..

me personally would stick with tried and tested methods...live rock or inert cured rock...what is wrong with egg crate and stands/shelving systems?

Paranoid.....or is it normal stocking anniversary #8
Hi

I have had a few fatalities recently and becoming paranoid...I do need to check my iodine level to be sure but generally never had a problem and critters never seemed to have shedding problems. (out tomorrow to get new test and additive)

I am struggling to keep my ph up and it seems to be adamant to remain at 7.8 whatever I do - I am actively adding buffer without joy :(

My algae scrubber seems to be working well and I am wondering if its an indirect effect of the same...
I know I purchased all my critters around the same time and normal life spans may mean they die around the same period but over the last month I have lost 3 shrimp and totally unexpectedly my lobster (my treasure!)...all other tests are fine.

any ideas or just paranoi? Anything else I should check, fish seem ok! am i missing something?

:( hate losing anything...

thanks in advance

Life Expectancy #9
Hi Gang

I was trying to find life expectancy of certain critters and common marine fish and realised their doesn't seem to be much out there and when there is it varies greatly...so....I am trying to create a quick reference spreadsheet incl life expectancy, can you help...thanks

I have attached the basic chart setup and plan to populate it over the next few days/weeks...and will happily make it available here - hopefully it will become a sticky if moderators think its good enough!

It could eventually be added to, where extra sheets on cold/pond/brackish/tropical are added!

thanks

In the meantime if you can answer with your experiences for common types such as crabs, hermits, shrimps, tangs, butterflies, blennies, etc and I will hopefully have a 'real hands on' time rather than wikipedia/googled results...

thanks

Attachment doesnt seem to work so uploaded it here....

Re: blue legs #10
Wouldn't expect it to have abandoned its shell and living without it...

Most probable thing is a slightly stronger one got hold of him, challenged him for his shell and killed him and now has his shell - hence one is now with the fairies!

This happened to me when I added my hawians....now if I add hermits I ensure they arent too hungary and that they are added different sides of the tank...watch them if you can first few days so this doesnt happen - however this is natural and if you want a true 'life like' tank its the downs of many 'ups' in experiencing such a wonderful hobby.
