Mussels #2
HI

has anybody used mussels to clean (No Not Mr Muscles!) their pond.

my dental hygienist has purchased 6 for ?20.00 and they are roughy about 5 inches long and she says they are doing a great job of cleaning the shelves, but she does wonder the following

1. if they fall off the shelf to the bottom will they stay there

1a. they wont be able to climb back up will they?

2. are they all one sex

3. if they are not all one sex will she have babies

4. if they do have babies how do they erm well erm 'do it'! etc!

5. is she barking mad!

any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: De-icing my pond #3
i must not have had it so cold here i leave my water fall on all winter and this keeps over 50% of the surface area clear of ice, not done anything different for the last few years and all seems well

Re: Fish behaviour #6
sicknote was named after he got attacked by the heron (we think) he had like a pincer shaped bruise on his back and used to come up for attention.

pond has recently been attacked by the heron again and i think i have lost a couple. so now i have a reinforced 1 inch square mesh heavy duty frame over it.

wont know till the lily pads have died away and i can see down to the bottom.

but the fish seem a bit more confident with this new grating over them as a few came up this morning to say hi when my mum went up to feed them, and yes she calls them all by name and i am sure they hear her coming as they wait for her, i go up and its dive dive dive.

Re: Fish behaviour #7
tempted to say OOPS

having read what all you guys have written about the correct way to set up a pond i did it all wrong then.

dug hole
lined it
filled with tap water
put some powder stuff in that treats tap water
next bought 10 little tiddlying goldfish and a few plants
left the fish in the bag so the water would be the same
removed frog the 14th time
planted plants put them in pond
let fish out
they went whoopee all round the pond ducking diving palying tick etc
put net over pond we live by a river that has a heron
4 years later pond is doing brilliant
fish bred and i got 5 one year old babies
but other than that it was pot luck

so do i have to re do it again but properly now !

regards

Re: WASHING PEBBLES IN....................................................? #10
Thanks for all the advice, in the end did it the easy wasy, emptied pond, scrubbed sides, washed it all out, tidied plants and then put it all back to gether. did it in the pouring rain as well so well chuffed it all done now.

added pic of fish having a day out in their summer paddling pool, all 10 of the big ones and 4 of the 5 babies showed.

regards
