apple snails and puppy dogs tails..... #1
Good afternoon folks!

I need some sage advice about Apple Snails. This is my second attempt at being an Apple Snail owner as the first two just curled up and died after four months.

After reading up about the poor souls I thought that maybe they were being underfed and started a concerted snail feeding campaign resulting in an algae bloom that could be seen by Google Earth. The fat gold fish were delighted but the snail still ended up dead.....

After paying particular attention to water quality, calcium hardness and supplements STILL they died as too did my friend Mark's and come to think of it anyone else I know who owns the ill fated beasties.

I have provided plants to chomp on, caves to hide in, coral chips to keep the calcium up, calcium supplements left over from the dearly departed Idi the crayfish to boost on occasion. I've flung in peas and occasionally when the gold fish don't hoover them all up the snails get some.

I know they can hibernate?or is that a big fib???? God what if I chucked out living pretending to be dead snails? Oh nooo instant grief!

So where oh where am I going wrong??? What do other Apple Snail keepers feed them and do you have any advice for a girl??

DRAT! I was hoping there was a way...hmmm well it's falling over the wags for another four months for me! I don't want to move them about too much so if they move with me they'll be staying.

I'm a very very spoiled girl there is no doubt about it. I couldn't go back to the city and at this rate my next move will be to a cave in the side of a mountain. I am becoming mad hermit fish lady.

Nice to hear from you Suey my dear. Feel free to drop by any time for a cup of tea and a wander.

xx

from tank to pond...how to transition goldfish!!! #5
Hi Guys long time no post from me. I am moving house to another dazzlingly beautiful highland location and have decided to donate the wags (4 large comets) to Mark's massive outdoor aquarium (i.e. a lap pool sized aquarium with goldies). The problem is how to do this at this time of year? Can I get them acclimatised and ready for such a change?

As the house I'm moving to is in an area full of sea eagles and some ospreys I doubt an outdoor pond would stay stocked for longer than an hour before word got out amongst the neighborhood birds of prey on the dive in restaurant. It's a small cottage and there really isn't room for two 200lt tanks so one has to go and its the wags.

Also sad news...my beloved belligerent Cray fish Idi Ahmin died two months ago. There was no obvious reason i.e. water profiles were normal, no injuries or signs of prior illness. SIGH!

Anyhoo let me know if you can help.

Love love Kirstin xx
p.s. uploaded the picture just to be a showing off gimp girl

sigh! infestation of thingies ..horrible white crawling things.. #8
Hi guys.
I posted in fish advice but actually now that I think about it poor Idi the Blue Cray of Doom could be at risk....his tank has suddenly become infested (well the bog wood) with white crawling flea sized critters. They look like aphids but without color. Idi appears fine but then again he could survive a nuclear explosion I'm sure.

I cleaned his tank on Monday and put in calcium, chalk strontium thingy to make the water liquid rock as he likes it. I also added melafix. I recently lost my prized Ryukin and am scared that it might have something to do with the crawly things. They bare no resemblance to a parasite that poor sick gold fish had when he was rescued from internet bandits.

What should I do? Dose the tank with something bug killerish?

Sigh~! It's never easy!

ahhh tank fleas? #9
Hi all! Yet another mystery from my odd and obtuse world. Idi the hostile cray fish has a strange infestation of flea sized white crawly things all over his bog wood. Idi is looking the picture of health but I'm worried!

I lost David the Milk Float last week due to what I assume is a bacterial infection and am anxious that my hostile crusty is next. Help help....they are like sea monkey's with less personality.
