Hey guys, So this morning we had an open house. I was at a friend's house before it and when I came home, some IDIOT let their child feed my fish. And they used, I kid you not, at least a year' s supply of food. My betta fish was so enlarged you can literally see his scales bulging and I am worried him or another fish is going to become constipated or get dropsy. And I am pretty sure my cycle has crashed because while the tank was cycling and I didn't know anything there was a rotten melon smell coming from it and once I figured out how to cycle it went away but now it is back. I have already netted as much as I could and did a water change but if anyone has suggestions on how to help that would be great. Ammonia: .25 ppm (normally at 0) Everything else is at 0
You don't have to bring old water, but when you bag them, keep them in their old tank water. If you are going long distances, open the bags to let air in. You can try to save the filter media so you won't have to cycle again. Just add it to a bag with the water. I would put the bags in a cooler to keep them insulated on the drive.
Turn up the heat as this quickens the life cycle of ich to help it get cured faster. You many want to try Ich Cure or my personal favorite Protozin by Waterlife which has many uses. Have you tested the water quality in your tank? Please post the results. Do they appear to be gasping for air?
I put carbon in my filter for maybe three weeks after medicating as it absorbs the medicine from the water to help protect filter media. I say it's okay for that and I always rinse mine out before adding it so the dust doesn't get in the tank
Sounds fungal to me, columnaris is more like losing scales or raw patches forming. I would use PIMAFIX but a lot of people don't agree on it's effectiveness or that it worls at all however it is what I use in my tanks. API also has a fungus cure you can check out.
