Re: HMA filters #3
Thanks for your replies, the only reason i want to try it is to save buckets of water when doing water changes. I don't have any other reason really if i'm honest.

The fish I have are

African knife fish
Bala sharks
Congo tetras
Apistogramma Hongsloi
Electric Blue Rams
Gold Spot Pleco L022
Hoplo Cats
Sterbei Corys
Small fire eel

I'm a plumber so there would be no cost to installing a filter so thats a plus side to me having one.

Apart from me having to test for chlorine are there any disadvantages of me going for a HMA filter ?

Thanks for your time

Craig

HMA filters #4
I'm toying with the idea of setting a HMA filter up, from what I have read on the internet it will cost me more than water conditioner but in my opinion it will make water changes easier for me.

Can anybody give me any advice if HMA will be better for my fish and can anybody recommend a brand of filter ?

Many thanks Craig

Re: Water quality #6
Hi Fishlady

I'm so sorry for the late reply !
I have had internet issues and i can't seem to log in on my phone !

I read your post though and have followed your advice to try and get to the bottom of the problem. I have been doing weekly water changes of 25% for the last 4 months and after my water levels being great for the first 2months of having my tank I became lazy and didn't perform tests on my water quality.

When i decided to do a test i found the results i previously posted. I have now managed to get my ammonia level down to 0.25 ppm.

I have changed my filter but managed to keep the same media and my tank water is circulating so much better. I'm hoping this will help also with my water quality.

My fish stock at the moment is
1 angel fish
4 silver dollars
1 porthole catfish
1 gibby pleco

My friend is taking my silver dollars and my angel fish for his 4ft tank as they will be better off in there than in my 3ft !

He is taking them in the morning so this should also help me get my water levels back on track !!

How much water should I be changing to help me fight my ammonia levels ?

Thanks for you time !!

Re: Water quality #7
hi thanks for your reply

My last post was ages ago and this is a tank that has been running for a good 5 months now !

I had got a bit lazy and i haven't been doing my tests and i just assumed if i was changing 25% of the water once a week that would be enough.

Lesson 1 here is not to get lazy again !

What can i do to lower my level of ammonia ?
Is my filter powerful enough ?
Thanks

Water quality #8
Hi everyone, just a quick post to see if my set up is ok and to make sure what im doing is right !

I did a 25% weekly water change last night and performed a test on my water quality today.

My results follow

Ammonia 1 ppm
Nitrate 10 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Ph 6.2

Should i be worried about my level of ammonia ? If so do i just reduce it by water changes ?

I have a 180L tank and i am running a Fluval 204 external filter. Is this big enough ? I am cleaning the filter pads with tank water weekly also.

Thanks for taking time to read
Craig

Re: help needed please ! danio fry #9
Thanks for reply FL.
They are free swimming, although most of them seem to just sit on the glass.
I have fed them this morning on some powdered flake and about 5 or 6 of them were eating it, but the other 20 or so just sat on the glass !
Is there anything I can do to help them feed ?

I rang my local aquatic dealer today and they suggested a liquid suspension food. Is this worth a try ?

Thanks Craig

help needed please ! danio fry #10
I have just moved my group of 5 zebra danios from a 39L tank in to a new cycled 180L tank and as I starting to empty my small tank i noticed something on the glass. After looking at the tank for a few mins i noticed around 30 small fry ! About the size of an eye lash.
I have no fry food as i never thought about what id do if they bread.
The fry are in my 39 L tank on there own so they wont be eaten but i dont know what to do about feeding them ?
All i have to feed them is flake food that i could grind in to powder ?
I will go to my local aquatic retailer in the morning and get some liquid food !
Should i feed them ground up flakes tonight ?
Im desperate for these little guys to make it !
Any advice will be great thanks !
