Re: Opinios of the Sera Air Driven Vac/Gravel Cleaner #1
I use this one which I find works quite well, only thing it does suck up quite a bit of sand.

The thermostats on heaters aren't very accurate so you need to gauge the setting based on the reading from a decent thermometer and adjust the heater setting relative to that.

I have numerous heaters by different manufacturers in a variety of tanks and not one is accurate. Some read high, some low unfortunately. If a heater is only reaching 24C when set to 26C, then you need to turn it up to read 28C. That should produce the correct temperature, but monitor by thermometer for a day or two to be sure.

EDIT: Corrected the appalling typos!

Thanks for your quick reply, I thought it would be something like that. Do I still need to leave both heaters in, is it better to have 2?

I also bought a digital thermometer just in case my mercury one was playing up.

Thanks

Paul

Temperature #3
Hi Guys,

Over the last week or so I've noticed that the temperature in my tank is not reaching 26 degrees as set by the heater. I initially thought my heater was playing up so went and bought a replacement, not that it made any difference. So this weekend I decided to try both in the tank, still no difference. So I now have 2 300w heaters.

It currently sitting at 23.9, when I first noticed that it had dropped it was sitting at 24.9

I really don't know whats going on.

Thanks

Paul

Well in that case you won't have to worry about the digging and the chomping. Push the elodea stems into the substrate and they should root in a few weeks.

Thats great, Thanks Dave.

I have a large airstone running 24/7, Do I need to perhaps turn it off during the day? Will it effect plant growth if I leave it on?

Don't want the fish to suffer if I turn it off.

Thanks

Paul

I think I'd keep them bunched myself. Hornwort doesn't produce roots at all, and if you don't weight it down it'll float about, so I'd keep it bunched together and replant it as the goldies dig it up. Elodea does root (although with goldies continually chomping on it and digging it up it probably won't get much chance to). If you've got enough plant weights you could weigh down the individual stems if you wanted.

I don't have goldies, just cardinal tetras and rainbowfish. Hope thats ok.

Thanks

Paul

Re: Sand Substrate #6
Well I've ordered some Hornwort and Elodea, so I'll give those a go when they arrive.

They come in bunches with weights, should I separate them or leave them as is?

Thanks

Paul

Re: Sand Substrate #7
That does look amazing, I only dream of a tank looking like that.

Thanks

Re: Sand Substrate #8
Thank you for the replies, I currently have a piece of bogwood with some java fern on it. It hasn't really flourished, so perhaps I need my lights on longer or more ferts. Also tried transplanting to another piece of bogwood, but they haven't really grown much at all.

Will look at the others you've recommended.

Thanks

Paul

Sand Substrate #9
Hi Guys,

I have a play sand substrate, can I have a planted tank?

Will plants grow in play sand? Or do I have to stick with plants on bogwood and rocks?

Thanks

Paul
