Re: Whitespot #1
Thanks for the responses. The UV unit I purchased is a 10W unit with the ability to regulate flow.

It seems my Other clown is clearly infected but not as badly. I also have a cardinal and a purple firefish.

Unfortunately I do not have the resources to setup a quarantine tank and the other solutions are not feasible given the number of inverts I have ( I do have a cleaner shrimp)

So am I likely to lose all my other fish?

Whitespot #2
Hi guys,
I have a orca 550 that I set up in Jan. Things were going great and I was sticking to 20% water changes until about a month ago when I blew my back out and was unable to lift the RO canisters. Only managed to do small water change once in the last month until weekend when I was able to buy more RO and did a 50% water change to compensate. Anyway I now have what seems to be a whitespot problem thats claimed my royalo gramma and one of my clowns and my other clown is definitely infected.

What causes whitespot and can it be treated with dosing tank like my freshwater tank?

Someone recommended a UV Steriliser which I have ordered. Will this work? I never want to lose another fish again except to old age. It was heart breaking which is why I will try anything to prevent this from happening.

Re: my tank progress and a few questions #3
Wow thanks for the replies.
I am using the API saltwater master test kit.

Actually I had the tank running with live rock and live sand for 6 weeks. At which point the ammonia and nitrites were reading zero and the nitrates was reading 5ppm. I did a 25% water change and then went out to the local marine store where I think I spoke to someone even less aware of marine stuff than me. I bought 3 red leg hermits, 3 turbo snails and 1 cleaner shrimp. 1 week later I bought 2 clown fish.

Things seem to be going well and the water quality is good.

Protein skimmer is doing nothing though. May have to fork out for a new one but thats something I have not budgeted for because I figured the stock one would be good for a while.

my tank progress and a few questions #4
Ok So I have had my Orcal Tl-550 setup for quite a while (2 months+) and been testing regularly although not everyday.

I have 13Kg of Live rock and quite a bit of live sand al;most 2" all round but not sure if it is too much.

Just added two small clownfish 4 days ago which brings my stock level to 2 fish, 3 hermit crabs, 2 Turbo snails and a cleaner shrimp. I feed the fish on mysis shrimp once a day and dry pellets once a day. Is this sufficient for them?

Also I have not really noticed any spikes since adding/feeding the fish. Is this normal since the mysis the fish dont eat plus general waste must be breaking down. DO I need a more sensitive tes kit?

I need to sort out the protein skimmer because the stock one I have does not seem to work properly. Should I replace it and if so can anyone recommend a good one?

Also went to local fish store and was asking about what is an ideal starter coral and she told me that my tank is not suitable for coral and I should just buy fish...Confused as this is a reef tank.

I am sure this is not true since I have seen so many examples of great looking reefs in orca tanks many of which are on this forum...???

any advice and help on any of these questions would be appreciated.

hitch hikers #5
Hi all,
I have just set up a marine aquarium boyu tl-550. I acquired some live rock and almost immediately I started noticing hitch hikers. I was wondering if there is any online reurces where I can go to identify what they are and if they are beneficial or harmful to my intended reef.

What I have seen so far,

Lots and lots of small white snails which appear to be feeding on the algae.

one snail about 1 or 2 cm diameter shell. Dark brown and beige shell.

Some tiny brown shrimp like worms. Move around in short sharp bursts relatively quickly.

One crab thing about an inch wide that camouflages well. Only seen once in the 4 weeks that I have had the rock and that was today which prompted me to write this. Given that I have been rock gazing for two weeks and only seen the crab once means he is probably more nocturnal and stays hidden.

I will try to get pics but my camera is rubbish.

Any advice as my water parameters suggest its time for first stock and I don't want to buy tank janitors only to have them get munched by rogue snails or crabs.

LR rubble #6
I have noticed that some retailers sell LR rubble but can I just break up one of my existing pieces with a hammer or is there any reason why this would be a no no for some reason that I am completely overlooking?

Hey Marcalans,
That looks awesome. Where did you get your rock from?

Re: Hi, new user... #8
That is one of the concerns I had when buying my tl-550 orca tank. Although it is 128 litres it is quite a tall tank and limits the fish type.

Re: Suggested quantites #9
Thanks for the pics. Beautiful tank and I love the arch effect that you have created!

Yeah mine is the 128litre tank so from your pics I would guestimate that I need at least 10-12KG of LR and at least 20lbs Live Sand if not more.

Re: Suggested quantites #10
Hi all I was really interested in Digitalstorms first question about LR/LS quantites. I have just purchased a tl-550 and am trying to research this. There is a lot of contradictory info about LS quantities.

My plan was to originally purchase 10lbs of live sand and 10kg of LR and let it cycle then look to add a couple more kg;s of LR and LR rubble.

Is this a good idea?
