Re: Biotope #6851
I'm sure he means the plant "Amazon Sword", you're thinking of "swordtails" ? Frogbit I believe is a floating plant.

Re: FK Meet Up 3 - Suggestions please #6852
oooh, this looks interesting! I'd also vote Marwell simply because its close to me but if its in range I'd love to tag along. What sort of event is 'The Meet up' ? Should I bring the kids and wife?

Re: Tank backgrounds #6853
Juwel do polystyrene backgrounds which look pretty good. They're 60cm x 55cm tiles which can be cut and joined to fit your tank. I bought 2 for my tank but as its notarrived yet I really can't say if they look as good as a back ground as i think they will.
What you should be aware of is that they cost £40ea or £60 if you want the root verson! You can simply buy and shape polystyrene yourself if your an artistic type. I'm not really so I did some overtime.
I've heard that plain black background also works well so as to give the illusion of depth to a tank and draw attention to the fish and plants

Re: :crying: #6854
Thats a nice idea but the tank was a Rena Calvados Panorama 120 with external filter & all kit etc for £500. I couldn't find a similar size bow front tank for anywhere near that price elsewhere!

PS thanks guys, your sympathy is making me feel much better :)

:crying: #6855
I have to tell someone...

I've just had a call from the fish store. My lovey new tank that was arriving today, the one I took today and tomorrow off for so I could get started right away. The one I rebuilt my living room for every night for the last two weeks and had a sleepless nights in anticipation of (yeah I'm sad) has been damaged prior to leaving the shop.

I cant tell you all how disapointed I am, they did say they're getting me another one for next week but this has really screwed up my weekend

Should I counter this news with excess of chocolate or alcohol ?

Fact or Fiction - Most plants use CO2 in the day and O2 at night? #6856
In general it seems common knowledge that plants use co2 and release o2 as part of photosynthesis, but I've heard that at night when photosynthesis stops o2 is used and co2 is released. It was also suggested that many plants use as much 02 at night as they released in the day.

Is any of this true ?

Re: New Setup - tap water concerns #6857
oops, lost this thread nd started a new one on the RO unit! I bought it, fitted it and now trying to figure out what 100 gallons per day actualy means, I think it means at 125psi at 25C its 100gallons per 24 hours... currently it seems closer to producing closer to 2.5 gallons per hour.

Re: Which CO2 system, if any? #6858
Thanks, I'm not too worried about making the plants grow fast - in fact I'd like them to be as low maintenance as possible!
Just a thought, if its just yeast and sugar to output the CO2 bubbled through a diffuser then couldn't I just make one out of plastic tube and a drinks bottle?

whats your wattage of your lights do you use ferts

Good question, no idea about the lights but I'll check and I'll use fertiliser if its generally considered the right thing to do!

Which CO2 system, if any? #6859
Simple questions that I haven't been able to get a straight answer to, so far.
For a 380 L planted tank, do I need CO2 or is it just recomended?
Assuming it would be best, can anyone suggest the right system for this size tank (bearing in mind I'm already way over budget!)

The local store has caniter type systems for £20 and £35 and then the next thing they have is covered in pipes and guages and costs nearly £200 the advice I got on them was pretty vague.

Thanks,

Re: De-humidifier #6860
Sorry, I forgot to mention they add mineralsback in and they've just dropped the price to 3.50. It is more expensive than the other store round here but I trust the staff more so I dont mind getting a little ripped off ;)
now I have this big tank comming tomorrow though I've started looking at buying my own RO unit because even at £3.50 per 25L its still going to cost a lot to fill a 380 L tank!
