Re: which system? #63
If you have 2500 to play with. I'd recommend you have the tank made special. and obviously have a stand made for it that suits your decor.

theres a company in falkirk called boss that build tanks to your personal specification and drill it where needed.

Work out where the tanks gunna go, work out the size you want. work out the size of sump (they make them too) and possibly have a sperate refugium. the refugium needs 24 hour lighting so its best if its away from your sump which you dont want to have any lighting for (that is if you have seperate refugium)

take into account the cost of plumbing as well. Overflows can just use cheap pipe from b&q (make sure its pottable and has no metal fittings)

The pipe you pump up should be pressure pipe, its thicker.

If you have the stand made to measure, this will probably be the most expensive part.

since you have a large budget, you should do some serious planning. With 2500 I would build an uber system.

I'd start my planning with...

Main tank, as large as possible, space permitting.
Stand. Made of good strong timber, with two sections with doors.
Sump - large sump which tank overflows into.
Refugium in seperate cupboard in stand next to sump, sump overflowing into refugium using simple piping. External pump, pumping water back into tank. Refugium needs lighting, possibly some small T5s, using all marine whites, no need for actinics.

Man I could go on for hours about the planning I'd do if I had 2.5k to spend on a tank setup.....but I dont have 2.5k

Re: Red algae everywhere #64
Make sure there is good waterflow over any of your precious corals, as said earlier, its normal, takes time to clear.

Problem with marine tanks is they take so much time and care to get right.

but once properly matured they are a joy and a spectical.

our tanks are the main talking point when folk come round.

my red slime cycle lasted 2 months but with plenty of Ro changes (damn tap water) adjusting powerheads, change in feeding our tank is getting there.

I'm getting lots of grief off my GF for fragging little bits of coral out of the display tank, for my sandbox tank (sandbox = tank I can try out things and play).

Re: TAz's New Project - Coral Frag Growing Tank #66
pulse xenia is quite easy.

bring the rock its on to the front of the tank and inspect it.

Look for a big stem, must be big, more chance of survival, easier to handle.

take a sharp blade and cut the stem between it and the main colony.

scrape the base away in the same stroke.

get your rock/reef plug and a small elastic band, place the frag on the rock and use the elastic band to hold the base of the frag in place (not too tight).

Leave for 5 days, remove elastic band. frag by this time should be stuck to the rock, and well on its way to recovery.

Re: Gravel Cleaner #69
okies, this is how I use my biorb syphon to clean my gravel.

I take the end off the syphon, (the grill bit on the intake) and I get the water flowing, I mash it end around the the gravel turning it over.

obviously you will end up with a load of gravel in the bucket. thats ok. empty the bucket being careful not to lose the gravel down the sink/toilet where ever you empty the bucket. The gravel in the bucket can then be rinsed out, placed into a sandwich bag, sunk to the bottom of the tank, bag ripped open and the gravel released back into the tank without clouding the water up.

That how I do it anywway <shrugs>
