newts are great fun. make sure they are not just baby paddletails as i was sold a pt as a firebelly and pts grow very big in comparison.
try not to worry about the size difference as it does happen, females are bigger and fatter. everything i read suggested that the males prefer their girls like that!
i hope it is a pair as that will (hopefully) stop them fighting. i had two male or female (wasnt sure) paddletails that fought all the time until one decided to go for a holiday down the back of the tank.
the battles are a sight to behold, and although they dont appear to damage each other it still isnt nice to see.
try planting the tank and addind 'caves' - ceramic flower pots etc, let them get their own territory.
when i first started mine were fussy eaters and the fish used to get the bloodworm first, so i used a flowerpot, placed against the glass that only the newts could get into and put the b/w in that. once they found it, they scoffed it and they've never looked back.
i keep mine with african clawed frogs now and they are very happy.
ive noticed that male mollies tend to spend most of their time chasing the females and guiding them around the tank with their dorsal fin. they dont really pause for much more than food.
one of my males has the biggest dorsal fin i have ever seen and he uses it to steer his chosen victim around the tank. he can get quite mean about it too. the females are also quite nasty when they want to be.
wow. im glad i asked now. im going to do the cricket thing and i have got reptomin but the dont like it. i suppose they would eat it if there was nothing else? i had no idea there was a xenopus diet available and i will now actively be looking for it.
when i got the frogs i looked them up on the internet and the sites i looked at all said that i shouldnt be using airstones etc as the frogs are very sensitive to the 'noise'. they said that it would be like us trapped in a small room with a hammerdrill 24/7. but if you suggest its ok then i'll get one for them. is it true that they can take pieces of meat and/or dog meat chunks when their bigger? i would have thought it too rich, but the dealer told me thats what he fed his adult on.
the place i got the froglets from said they only needed bloodworm. i do give them earthworms as and when i do the gardening...
i was also giving them insects that came into the house, eg moths (never flies) daddy long legs etc but i was told not to by a shop as they are 'dirty'
i just really fancy a tank set into the wall. you would have a small room behind it for maintainence etc but from the front it would be flush with the wall. im sure i saw similar in pfk. also was a guy who had a tank in his cellar he could actually swim in. and the room was big enough to allow standing room next to it. bug**r doing those water changes! i do want his house though. but not his power bills.
