Hi all, I'm not new to tropical fish, but it's twenty years since I last set up a tank and kept tropicals.
I can't believe the changes in tanks ,filters and heaters, I am now feeling like a complete begginer, so I thought I would ask for help[.
My tank is 48" long / 16" wide and 22" deep. I am on day 8 of setting up the tank and have 10 neon tetra and 1 leapard plecy. This on the advice of my local aquarist shop. I have since read that neon's should not be used for setting up a tank. I do not want to put any poor fish through this stress if they are not up to it.
Help please should I remove them and take them back to the shop or just carry on.

My goldfish have been in their pond for approx. 3 Years. They were introduced from a reputable aquatics dealer at around an inch long, along with some shebunkins. The first thing we noticed, was the following year, one of the goldfish had turned jet black. I believe that this is the colour of very young goldfish, so put it down to its having 'reverted'. The fish are now around three to four inches long but one of them has started to turn white! I noticed it at the beginning of the year, with small white patches. Thinking it may be white - spot I kept a close eye on it, but there is no sign of any ill health or fungal growth. It is as lively as any of the other fish. It has got ot the stage now, where it is almost all white, with a few gold scales on its back and the head is still gold. Another one seems to be starting with the same patches. I've also noticed that one of the shebunkins seems to be going pale, losing that bright vibrant colouring that they have. Again, all the fish feed well and seem to have plenty of energy, so I'm wondering what's wrong? Can anyone help please?

IF THE FINS ARE DOWN THE FISH ISNT HAPPY HAVE YOU CHECKED THE WATER FOR NITRITE,OR EVEN THE PH,HOW LONG HAS THE TANK BEEN SET UP ? HAS THE FILTER HAD TIME TO MATURE CORRECTLY ?THEY WILL STILL EAT EVEN IF THE WATER PARANITERS ARE WRONG SO CHECK THE WATER

YOUR BEST BET WOULD BE TO PUT MORE FEMALES THAN MALES IN THE TANK TO STOP ANY FIGHTING THAT MAY OCCUR

Looks to me like they would be ok, except during breeding, when the males can get territorial and aggressive. If you can find another peaceful pair you should be ok.

Having recently built our first pond,3000 gallon capacity,I am after some advice as a beginner.
The pond has a 20ft stream/waterfall into two joined ponds,the stream is concrete but has now been sealed,the ph is at present 9.
Is this suitable for fishkeeping,and if so what types would you recommend?
If the ph is still too high,what would be the best method to lower it.
Prior to sealing the stream,the ph was in excess of 10,so it has reduced (a bit)

I am completely new to keeping tropical fish and currently have one pair of Dwarf Gourami. These are already a favourite of mine and I would like another pair. Although they are a peaceful fish, can anyone tell me if more than one pair will live safely together, or would there be a tendency for the males to compete for the females?

I have just set up my first tank with 3 medium sized Shubunkin. They all seem perfectly happy (only been in there 3 days), but one of them has his fins closed and seems to swim slower than the rest. He is also quite lathargic most of the time. Anyone have ideas why? He's eating fine, and the tank seems to be working correctly.
