New Tank & New Fish! #262742
Hi All

Nice to be back in the coldwater section - in fact it's nice to be back on the forum at all!

Been so busy for ages now, firstly switching bedrooms and all my 22 years worth of posessions!
Then on Sunday James and I went to collect my early birthday present a beech Juwel Rio 240 and cabinet - they are like new and came with very interesting inhabitants indeed

I have spent the last couple of days sorting the aquarium out, rehoming some unsavoury characters - such as a certain Rainbow Crab who has bit all my lovely goldfish, so all their fins are in tatters and growing back It was quite funny as the goldfish kept going back for more biting, and looked at the crab as if to say "hey why did you bite us?"
The tank is running at 22/23 degrees (we haven't altered it from it's old tropical settings) and i have decided maybe i will keep some of the tropical fish who lived in the tank previously if all goes well, 2 gold gouramis, 2 clown loach, a betta, a shoal of Phantom & Cardinal Tetras, guppies, a female swordtail and babies and my favourite - a small blue lobster, who will apparently stay small

I also couldn't resist a new big Lionhead Goldfish in a lfs, i kept a Lionhead a while back who didn't make it and am determined to make up for my mistake
I've also inherited a large Goldfish from a relative, who is used to eating livefood everyday! i hope my varied diet of veg and pellets will please it!
I've also got 2 telescopes, a tiny brown and gold telescope-unusual i think and a black moor, which my dad bought me as a surprise, as he thought it was a shubunkin

The tank holds 240 litres, which is just over 53 gallons
I think at the mo, it is ok, but will eventually become overstocked when the goldfish grow and they were who i got the tank for.
At the mo, even with all those fish, the tank looks qute empty i think

I have planted live plants in it again, with pink sand

I need to take some pics to show you all! will try and get good pics of all the inhabitants to

Can't wait til Goldy gets back from Hols, have so much to tell her!!! Come back Goldy!

Glad to hear he made it!
Thanks to Fishy, I would consider using the Protozin now, as i have had fatal results with anything but salt and tea tree based medicines, such as Melafix and Aquarian First Aid

Happy to hear about it, Chloe.
Congratulations to you and to Fishy of course.
I was told Protozin is a good remedy covering wide spectrum of symptoms, although a guy in the shop where I bought my first fish said it was a bit old-fashioned. Old-fashioned or not it is good as long as it brings positive results!

Final update on Fishy's recovery!!!! #262746
I just thought i would let you all know about how my fantail is now!

I had a horrendous time with him and I can't believe that (a) he is still alive, and (b) that he is completed recovered.

I mean, it went on for at least a month with him first having swim-bladder (or at least something that was making him float upside down for days) to then developing REALLY bad fungus and lying on his side underneath the filter. He was in the hospital tank for 2 weeks in total and I used waterlife protozin (which i now swear by) and salt.

He has been back in the main tank now for a while and although the scales on his bum (unfortunately that's where the fungus was) still haven't completed come back (they are scales, but just white) he is swimming around more than he did initially! In fact, they all (Cod, Fat Girl Fish and Fishy!) seem much happier now.

So thanks everyone for your help! I'm sure that if I hadn't have found this forum, Fishy would definitely have been a gonner!

Re: fish deaths #262747
Hello
Sorry to hear about your fishes.
Did you notice any change of behaviour or swimming patterns before they died?
Sometimes freshly imported fish (especially from China I hear) suffer from gill bacterial infections which you cannot really see with the naked eye. They are infectious.
So maybe get one fish to start with and if it is fine after 2-4 weeks, get him a friend.

On the other hand, you said you cleaned the tank 'well' after the death of your Ryukin. If you completely changed the water and taken out everything, it is like starting a new tank again in which case it should ideally be cycled first (something you can learn a lot about from this site as Chloe rightly mentioned).

How big is your tank?
If it was not cycled (after the thorough clean-out) the chances are that toxins may have accumulated after a week or so.

As fishyfeet mentioned, adding live bacteria helps a lot.
I use Stress Zyme (Aquarium Pharmauceticals) and find it very good. Although myself I did not cycle my new tank properly, I never had significant water quality problems when using this stuff together with Stress Coat and salt.
(That is not to encourage you not to cycle the tank).

By the way, I often feel like buying sick fish from a shop wanting to save them... You've done well with your one-eyed flippy fishy!

Fishyfeet is right. You should feed goldfish twice a day or even once a day when they get older. How big are your fishes?

Also I noticed you wrote:
Quote:
all my tests come back normal, the ammo is a tad bit higher than normal

What do you actually mean by 'normal' and 'a bit higher'?
Ammonia should always be 0, nitrite less than 0.3mg/l and nitrate below 50, preferably under 25.
If you are overfeeding nitrite may be high.

Maybe you could give us your readings so that we are able to see better what is happening?

How are Paxil and Xanax and what does the tank look like today?

sounds like you are feeding too much, and you are getting uneaten food decaying in your tank.

Re: Completely Upset #262750
i feed them wardley goldfish flakes, wardley shirmp pellets wardly slow sinking goldfish granuels and every now n then wardley tubifex worms, thye only get one thing at a time, like in the morning theyll get a pinch of flakes and then before i got to work around 4:30 theyll get a few shirmp pellets and then before i go to bed they get a pinch of the granuels. they only get the tubifex like 1/2 cube instead of the shrimp pellets
