Re: Juwel Nitrate Removal Sponge #261832
I've found the magnetic algae cleaners to be quite good.

The only thing that worries me is the the cleaning surface is starting to peel on the one for the outside.
Could scratch the glass ?

Re: Red Capped Oranda sick? #261833
Well i'm no expert but i don't think that your oranda is sick, expecially as there are no other signs other than colour change.

However, i would get a bubble machine. I just think that it's another good way of getting oxygen into the water, (and they look nice!) You can pick them up on ebay.

If you've recently turned the power on your filter down and the fish have been gulping for air at the surface then it's probably because of the oxygen reduction.

Hi Lozrich

Welcome to Fishkeeping! What is your tank set up? I.e. tank size, equipments etc? Do you have a filter and an air/bubble machine?

Tank is 2ft x 1ft x 1ft with a gravel base.
i have a filter sufficient for a tank up to 3ft. I have recently turned down the power a bit as the force was moving the gravel about and i was having to re-arrange it every 3 or 4 days.
i do not have an air bubble machine but the filter does cause surface bubbles

Hi Golach! Welcome to Fishkeeping.

Your fish are probably just getting a bit frisky yeah. Just keep an eye on them and if it seems to be getting too much for the gold fantail, you may have to do something about it like separating them. They're obviously happy though to be breeding!

I feed them Aquarian Goldfish Flakes.
Is there an easy way to increase the oxygen?

What do you feed them, maybe switch to some colour enhancing food such at hikari gold or something, also sounds as if you may have a lack of oxygen in the tank. di

Red Capped Oranda sick? #261840
I am after some good advice. I have had a fish tank for about 10 weeks now. I have a black moor and a red capped oranda. Recently, the oranda's head has taken on a sort of yellowy "sickly" colour and i was wondering if he may have some sort of disease. He acts the same as before (feeds well, swims well) and i can see no sign of distress other than the change in colour. Saying that though, he does seem to spend more time at the top of the tank as if he is trying to suck in the air but he does not do this all the time. The black moore has no problems at all. Is the oranda sick? and if so can you recommend treatment?
Thanks
Lawrence
